Weekend In Winterset – January 22nd

Wondering, “What is there to do this weekend?” Here are the answers!

This Weekend

Community Ice Fishing Day

Saturday • 1/23 • 9:00am – Noon
Criss Cove

The Community Ice Fishing Day is open to anglers of all ages who would like to try their hand at ice fishing. Staff from the Conservation Board, and other experienced with ice fishing, will be present to provide instruction to any beginners. A limited number of rods and bait will be available for use during the event.

More experienced anglers are welcome to bring their own equipment and join us on the ice. Participants are encouraged to bring their own snacks to enjoy during the event. All participants should come dressed for the weather in multiple layers of warm clothing. This event will be held providing the ice meets safety standards. Anyone 16 years of age or older must have a valid fishing license. Children should be accompanied by a licensed adult.

Notting Hill

Saturday • 1/23 • 7:00pm
The Iowa Theater

William Thacker (Hugh Grant) is a London bookstore owner whose humdrum existence is thrown into romantic turmoil when famous American actress Anna Scott (Julia Roberts) appears in his shop. A chance encounter over spilled orange juice leads to a kiss that blossoms into a full-blown affair. As the average bloke and glamorous movie star draw closer and closer together, they struggle to reconcile their radically different lifestyles in the name of love. 1999, Rated PG-13, 2hr 4min

I’ve always been a fan of Hugh Grant (my favorite Christmas movie is Love Actually.) My favorite part of this movie is him saying, “Whoopsie Daisy!”

Virtual Play Auditions

Sunday • 1/24 • 6:00pm
Monday • 1/25 • 7:00pm
The Winterset Stage

Since it’s going to be awhile before audiences can safely meet in person again, the Winterset Stage is reviving something from their past and giving it a twist—VIRTUAL Dinner Theater! The actors will all perform via Zoom & audience members will watch and dine from home with a fabulous meal from Winterset’s newest taproom, The Drift.

If you’re looking for a new experience this year, you’re encouraged to attend the auditions on January 24th or 25th! Auditions and rehearsals will also be virtual—no in-person contact at all! Rehearsals will begin February 1st and take place in the evenings (specific schedule TBA after casting).

The show is a zany courtroom drama/mystery…

Casey Licit is on a cross-country road trip when she’s apprehended and held for trial in a town appropriately named Berserksville. Charged with an outrageous triple crime, Casey maintains her innocence. But as the trial begins, our level-headed defendant realizes her hapless defense attorney is an ineffective dolt, and the prosecution effectively uses silly, childish distractions to win the case, including bribing Judge Falter and witnesses with candy and leading the courtroom in the Macarena!

The parade of witnesses offers testimony that’s nothing more than twisted fibs, boastful self-promotion, and gabby gossip. It also creates the ideal set-up for a virtual show, with not more than a half dozen cameras needing to be on at the same time, while still including a large, flexible cast where everybody has their moment to shine.

You’ll need to register for auditions so they can email you a preview script.

Tickets for the performance will include a three-course from The Drift and you’ll have the option to pick-up your meal or have it delivered. Those will go on sale on January 26th.
