Instructors Sandra Geronimo and Gina Crow will guide you in making one pair of earrings and one 18” or 20” necklace. You will learn to fuse, form and texture fine silver wire to design your earrings and necklace. No jewelry experience necessary just a desire to create. The Winterset FFA Alumni and Blue & Gold Boosters’ Haunted House will be at the fairgrounds again this weekend. Remember that if you’re a person who likes to look but not be spooked, October 26th and 27the will be a PG Weekend. Cost is $10 for adults and $5 for children 10 and under.

These classes, led by Paul Meyer, are free and open to everyone. Any individual who is interested in capturing images will find something useful. No prior experience required. The theme for this session is photo composition and posing. Register online or call 515-462-1731. Space is limited.
A bit about the teacher: Paul Meyer’s 30-year career in photography has taken him around the United States. He has shot hundreds of weddings in 17 states, photographed the changing Iowa landscape, and documented small-town life. He has used just about every kind of image recording device and continues to use them regularly.
Exhibit Opening Reception

Iowa Quilt Museum
The Iowa Quilt Museum has just unveiled a new exhibit. (They change their exhibits four times a year!) This display is titled Waste Not, Want Not and it’s all about quilts made from scraps and tiny pieces. Go check out the exhibit at their opening reception next Saturday. Admission is free and there will be light refreshments served.
Halloween Hikes

Pammel Park Lodge
Celebrate this spooky holiday by spending an evening at the Pammel Park Lodge. Halloween Hikes is a yearly event that features live stories and skits along the lodge trail and tons of children’s activities inside the lodge. Each year, the stories and skits are presented by the Winterset High School Conservation Club. This year the theme for the event is “Stories of the Sky” which will feature Native American/Greek creation legends of how the stars, moon, and nighttime creatures came to be.
Costumes are encouraged but not required for this event. There will be a costume contest with prizes. Hayrack rides will be available from the lodge to the campground for trick-or-treating. The hayrack ride is included with the purchase of an event ticket. Tickets are $5/person (children and adults). Children 3 and under are free. Hikes will leave the lodge every 15 minutes beginning at 6:00 pm with the last leaving at 7:45 pm. You may reserve a hike time when you purchase a ticket.

Victorian Mourning

Madison County Historical Complex
Learn Victorian mourning traditions, visit the Bevington Mansion set for the occasion, and hear how a widow observed Victorian customs during this FREE event at the Madison County Historical Complex.
After a short program in the Museum lounge, a lighted procession will proceed to the Bevington Mansion where a Victorian widow will explain her elaborate dress and the customs of the day. Appropriate organ and piano music will be played and mourners will greet you in the room where the body would have been viewed. The Madison County Historical Society appreciates that the Earlham Historical Society loaned several pieces from their collection to be used in this event.
Charles D. “Doc” Bevington built the mansion in 1856 and was extremely successful in all his endeavors – farms cross several states, livestock, purebred racing horses, and multiple businesses, including local bank president – that allowed him to amass a huge fortune. He died in 1903 and laid “in state” in this house where his funeral took place on November 16, 1903. The mansion was placed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1976. The Madison County Historical Society invites you to come explore the customs of this era which form the basis of our current funeral traditions. This is an opportunity to go back over 100 years in time and learn more about the heritage of Winterset and Madison County. Please call 515-462-2134 to reserve your spot. DIY Barn Block Painting Class
Two session options • Starting October 28th or October 30th
at the Iowa Quilt Museum
In the Midwest, “Barn Blocks,” painted panels representing patchwork quilt block designs, decorate barns, rural outbuildings, and garages in towns. In this three-session class, students will learn about American quilt block history, select a favorite block of their own, and learn special, no-fail techniques as they draft and paint their own 4’ x 4’ quilt block panel. Two sessions are running concurrently – Sunday afternoons OR Tuesday evenings.

Winterset High School Auditorium
Tickets are now on sale for the WHS fall musical, Fiddler on the Roof. Each student in the production is selling tickets. You can also purchase tickets in the High School activities office and at the Friday Night football game this week. New this year is priority seating: pay $2 extra per ticket for a reserved seat in the middle of the auditorium. This guarantees you a great seat WITHOUT having to arrive early. You must purchase tickets in advance to get priority seating. Regular ticket prices are $7 for adults, $5 for student, and Activities Passes are accepted. You must show your Activities Pass and your ticket upon entering the auditorium.
