If you’re not a member, Friends of the Library memberships are available at the library’s front desk or at the book sale door. Book Sale items are available for a freewill donation. All proceeds support Library programs, collections, and services.

The 19th Annual County School Preservation Conference is being held in Winterset this weekend. Each year, county school preservationists and enthusiasts gather to learn the history and techniques to preserve Iowa’s county schools. This year, the focus of the two-day event is the role that a one-room country school can play in a complex of historical buildings. Friday’s program in Winterset includes workshops and Saturday will be filled with tours of country schools and other historic sites across both Madison and Dallas counties. Madhaüs Gallery will be starting a new Beginning Glassblowing Class this Saturday, September 29th from 9:00am to Noon. This is an introduction to glassblowing class structured to give you a basic knowledge of the glassblowing studio, safety, and processes used to make beginner level projects (paperweights, ornaments, small vessels). The class meets on three consecutive Saturdays for a total of none hours over three weeks. To reserve your spot, contact Robin at 515.707.4309.
Head to the Winterset Art Center this Saturday, September 29th, from 9:00 am – 1:00 pm to celebrate Artoberfest. Grab the whole family, there will be tours of the art center (they’re working on some great renovations right now) and a variety of creative projects like a watercolor table, a finger knit station, a pine cone bird feeder area, and more. If you’re not familiar with the Winterset Art Center, this is a great opportunity to learn what they’re all about.
No previous experience is required for this class but it is intended for ages 17 and up. The class fee is $30 for Winterset Art Center members and $35 for non-members. Space is limited and advance registration is required for this class. Please email wintersetart2016@gmail.com to sign up.
The Winterset Art Center Clay Club meets the 1st and 3rd Tuesday of the month at 7:00 pm in the evening. Participants of this workshop may come to the art center ceramic studio at that time to glaze their pieces.
Last night, Megan made a delivery to the 4-H building at the State Fairgrounds which also meant she had the opportunity to take a good look at the Jacobson Exhibition Center across the street. This building features rows of quilt block tiles along much of its exterior. Our online searching didn’t turn up anything about their origins, but we’re sure that state fair experts, Jerry Parkin & Dorothy Faidley will be able to tell the story. Jerry & Dorothy will be at the Iowa Quilt Museum this Saturday, September 29th, at 2:00 pm, for an Iowa State Fair Panel Discussion. Jerry is a Madison County resident and an Iowa State Fair board member, and Dorothy is the Superintendent of Fabrics & Threads for the Iowa State Fair. They each have a wealth of knowledge about the fair and, surely, some interesting stories to share as well. This event is included with the price of admission to the Iowa Quilt Museum – $6 for adults, $4 for children, FREE for members.
Tonight begins the run of Alpha at The Iowa. Alpha is your basic “boy and his dog” story, except this time the dog is a wolf and the story takes place twenty-thousand years ago. Young Keda tries to survive alone in the wilderness after he’s left for dead during his first hunt with his Cro-Magnon tribe. He soon forms an unlikely alliance with a lone wolf that was abandoned by its pack. Facing overwhelming odds and nonstop danger, Keda and the wolf must now trek through a harsh and unforgiving landscape to make it home before winter.
Registration is open right now for young people to join one of Madison County’s 4H clubs. You don’t have to live in the country or on a farm to be in 4H—it’s for EVERYONE! The cost is only $40 for the year, and the opportunities that being a 4Her provides are invaluable. On Sunday, September 30th, and Monday, October 1st, at 6:00 pm at the Iowa Theater, The Winterset Stage will hold auditions for Scrooge the Musical. This musical version of the classic Dickens story is being produced on December 6th, 7th, 8th and 9th. There are plenty of roles in this show for both adults and children and not every role requires singing. Audition materials will be provided; you do not need to prepare anything in advance. All community members are invited to attend auditions; previous acting experience is not required. In fact, this show would be a great introduction to the stage if you have never performed, or if you’ve been away from performing live for awhile.

Beginning October 2nd, HCI Hospice Care Services and Madison County Health Care System will be offering an educational grief support group, Understanding Your Grief.
This group will meet for eight weeks on Tuesdays from 1:30 to 3:00 pm at the Winterset Library. The groups are free and open to the public. Pre-registration is required as seats for each group are limited. All summer long, community members have been joining together to Walk Around the Clock over the noon hour around our beautiful Winterset town square. The last one of the season will be held next Wednesday, October 3rd, which is also the Healthiest State Initiative Annual Walk! Not only is this a great opportunity for us all to get some exercise and fresh air, but by participating in the walk and sharing a photo on Facebook, Twitter, or Instagram (or all three) you could help Winterset win $1,000 to use toward a wellness project in the community!

Beginning Wednesday, October 3, Iowa State University Extension and Outreach Madison County will be offering Great Beginnings for Families. In this five-week skills building program the following topics will be covered: positive discipline and guidance, helping children resolve conflict, basic principles of child development, handling uncomfortable emotions and feelings, and encouraging learning through play.
“Our goal is to help parents realize the strengths they already have along with gaining some new knowledge, skills and techniques to assist them in providing and building a solid foundation to raise awesome children and create a happy, healthy family,” said Rosa Gonzalez, Iowa State University Extension and Outreach Family Life Specialist and Great Beginnings facilitator. “Parents will come away from this course with more confidence in their abilities as parents and reduce behavior problems along with encouraging and supporting their children as they grow.”
Great Beginnings for Families will take place on Wednesdays, October 3rd through October 31st from 5:30 to 7:00 pm at the Madison County Extension Office, located at 117 N John Wayne Drive in Winterset, Iowa. There is no fee to participate but registration is required. Register online or call the ISU Extension office at 515-462-1001. Please register by Monday, October 1st.
