Weekend in Winterset, Nov. 17-19, 2017

‘Tis the season for early shopping opportunities and getting in the holiday spirit! Angel Wings & CT is hosting their annual Christmas Open House this Friday through Sunday, with a special night-before preview party TONIGHT (Thursday) from 5:00 to 7:00.

Heartland Fiber is also having a Holiday Open House today through Saturday with refreshments, a sign-up for door prizes, and more. Stop in to see their expanded line of gifts, and they’ll also have plenty of quick projects and kits to provide you with options for quick knitted and crocheted gifts. You still have time to give something handmade!

The annual Holiday Hop bazaar is planned for this Saturday, November 18th from 8:30 to 1:30 pm. It will include seven churches and the Winterset Art Center, all brimming with a variety of handmade goods. There will also be a Stop & Shop Craft Sale at the VFW Hall this Saturday from 9:00 to 2:00.

On Saturday morning, the Winterset Parks & Recreation Department will host its annual Turkey Toss event from 9:00 to Noon in the High School Gym. There is no fee for this fun family activity. A child and parent form a team to compete in a free throw shooting contest. There are three age groups: 3rd-5th grade, 6th-8th grade, and high school (boys and girls). The highest scoring team in each age group wins a free turkey!

On Saturday evening, Covered Bridges Winery will have live music by Tony Valdez and Don Jacques from 7:00 to 10:00, with food available by Up in Smoke Barbecue from 6:30 to 8:30 pm.

The Iowa Theater has a great weekend planned with A Bad Moms Christmas opening on Friday night and afternoon showings of Goodbye Christopher Robin on Saturday and Sunday. Their Way Back Wednesday selection this week is the perfect Thanksgiving movie: Planes Trains & Automobiles! And next Friday after Santa comes to town in the Festival of Lights Parade, they’ll celebrate with Elf at 8:00 pm.

Winterset United Methodist Church

The Friday after Thanksgiving, Winterset celebrates the Festival of Lights with special activities all around the square and a lighted parade at 7:15 pm.

If your business or organization would like to participate in the parade, visit www.madisoncounty.com for an application. The more the merrier!

Winterset will also celebrate Small Business Saturday on November 25th, starting with a pancake breakfast at the American Legion Hall by the Winterset Kiwanis and extending all day with lots of shopping specials, horse drawn carriage rides, and more.

On Saturday, November 25th at 5:00 pm, watch as the Madison County Historical Complex lights up the hill! Visitors are welcome and invited to drive through and see the light display every evening from 5:00 to 10:00 pm through the holidays.

Finally…

The Winterset Art Center was the recipient of a $5,500 donation by the Madison County Women’s Giving Circle. This gift to the Art Center creates the “Madison County Women’s Giving Circle Children’s Art Scholarship Endowment.” The Art Center will match, from general funds, the 5% annual draw off the Endowment to fund the entry fees for children’s programming, based on application referrals from organizations in the community who help families in need. In 2017 the Madison County Women’s Giving Circle has given $18,550 to local causes, bringing their grand total since the group’s inception in 2012 to $98,090. Congratulations to the Winterset Art Center and thank you to the Madison County Women’s Giving Circle!
