Opening day for the Madison County Farmer’s Market is on Saturday, May 12th. The market is open from 8:00 am – Noon and is a great place to find produce, baked goods, crafts and more. Start your Saturday morning with a stroll through the stalls and see what they have to offer. The farmer’s market runs every Saturday through October 6th on the courthouse lawn.
This Weekend
The Iowa State University Extension and Outreach is holding a county-wide food drive through May 11th. In Winterset, food can be taken to the ISU Extension office at 117 N John Wayne Drive. There are also drop-off locations in Earlham and St. Charles.
Opening day at the Winterset Cidery is Friday, May 11th. The Cidery will be open from 1:00 – 10:00 pm on both Friday and Saturday. On Saturday, Zachary Freedom will be providing live entertainment from 6:00 – 9:00 pm. Up in Smoke will have food available on both Friday and Saturday evenings.
Saturday, May 12th is the day for the semi-annual City Wide Garage Sale. Check out The Shopper for a list and map of over 48 participating locations and start the hunt for your diamond in the rough.
The 6th Annual Winterset Wine Walk is Saturday, May 12th, from 4:00 – 7:00 pm. Hosted by the Madison County Chamber of Commerce, downtown Winterset merchants, and area wineries, the Winterset Wine Walk is an event of shopping & wine sampling. For only $20 you can have a limited-edition, commemorative wine glass for sampling, and a $5 coupon towards the purchase of a bottle of wine from one of the featured wineries! There will also be live music on the courthouse lawn and the Madison County Cattlemen will be serving food on the SW corner of the square. Participants must be 21 years of age or older and wristbands will be required. Tickets are available at the Chamber of Commerce office at 73 Jefferson Street in Winterset, or can be purchased online while they last.
Also on Saturday from 4:00 – 7:00 pm, the Central Iowa Auto Club will host their monthly Classic Car Show & Shine. The cars will be located on the North side of the square. There is no entry fee and there are door prizes available for car entrants. These events happen monthly during the summer and are always free to the public.
Re:Home of Winterset has a new logo, a newly remodeled upstairs area, and new hours that start this weekend. They will be open Thursday 11:00 – 7:00, Friday 10:00 – 6:00, Saturday 9:00 – 5:00 and *New* Sunday 12:00 – 4:00.
Madhaus Gallery will start two new sessions of their Beginning Glassblowing classes soon. One session will start Saturday, May 12th and run for three weeks on Saturdays from 9:00 am – Noon. The second session will start on Tuesday, May 15th and run three weeks on Tuesdays from 6:00 – 9:00 pm. This is an introduction to glassblowing class structured to give students a basic knowledge of the glassblowing studio, safety, and processes used to make beginner level projects (paperweights, ornaments, small vessels). The class is a total of 9 hours over three weeks. To reserve your spot, contact Robin at 515.707.4309. Cost is $375.
The Iowa Theater will host I Feel Pretty (PG-13) this weekend. Actress Amy Schumer plays a woman struggling with insecurity who awakens from a fall believing she is the most beautiful and capable woman on the planet. Her new confidence empowers her to live fearlessly, but what happens when she realizes her appearance never changed? On Wednesday, May 16th, the classic flick Sabrina (G), starring Audrey Hepburn, William Holden & Humphrey Bogart, will have a turn on the big screen. Sunday, May 13th, is, of course, Mother’s Day. We would like to wish a Happy Mother’s Day to our moms and we hope you have a chance to show your mom a little extra love this Sunday as well.

Children who will be entering Kindergarten this fall can attend the Kindergarten Experience on Tuesday, May 15th. There are two times for the experience and if you know of a child who does not attend a Winterset Preschool, call the Winterset Elementary Office at 515-462-1551 to get them registered.
The Winterset Community School District will hold a district-wide garage sale on Wednesday, May 16th, & Thursday, May 17th, from 4:00 – 6:00 at the Winterset Administration Building. The district has lockers from the old middle school, auditorium seats from the old middle school, student desks and chairs, book shelves, file cabinets, a variety of tables, instruments, and more. Use the SW ramp entrance to the building at 110 W Washington. Only cash is accepted for payment.
Take a hike through Pammel Park on Wednesday, May 16th. The hike will include a short history program covering the development of Pammel Park and the involvement of the Civilian Conservation Corp in Madison County. Then hikers can stretch their legs along the backbone trail while seeing unique features like the limestone backbone, Pleistocene snails, and Chinquapin Oaks. The hike will meet at the Backbone Shelter Parking inside Pammel Park at 7:00 pm on May 16. All ages welcome. This hike is being sponsored by the Madison County Conservation Board as a part of the Wellness Wednesdays in Winterset program.

The Winterset Stage is announcing their summer line-up of education programs for young actors. There are four different sessions from which to choose, and offerings for kids as young as preschool all the way through eighth grade. All sessions will take place at The Iowa Theater on Monday through Thursday mornings plus Thursday afternoons and conclude with a final performance of some sort at 5pm.
