Weekend in Winterset, May 17th-20th, 2018

We love it when we get to tell you about cool people doing nice things for others in our community. Last night we had the privilege of seeing the Madison County Women’s Giving Circle award $6450 to the Friends of the Winterset Public Library. The library will be installing an interactive truck in the children’s section. It will feature moveable parts, interactive manipulatives and a cool ‘nook’ where young visitors can sit and read.

This marks the largest quarterly donation of the Women’s Giving Circle, which was founded in 2012 for the purpose of supporting projects that promote dignity, equality, and opportunity for women and children in Madison County. The Madison County Women’s Giving Circle meets quarterly. If you’d like more information about being a part of this group, contact Ester Mae Cox at 515-462-6798 or missestermae@gmail.com.

This Weekend

Today, Thursday, May 17th, is the last chance to catch the WCSD district-wide garage sale at the Winterset Administration Building from 4:00 – 6:00. The district has lockers from the old middle school, auditorium seats from the old middle school, student desks and chairs, book shelves, file cabinets, a variety of tables, instruments, and more. Use the SW ramp entrance to the building at 110 W Washington. Only cash is accepted for payment.

If this fabulous spring weather has gotten in you in the mood for a little shopping, plan a jaunt around the square this weekend to check out what our local merchants have to offer this season. Pine Creek (located on the west side of the square) is celebrating the royal wedding of Prince Harry & American actress Meghan Markle this weekend at their store with refreshments and shopping specials. Hats are an essential wardrobe piece at English weddings, so come donning a hat and you’ll be recognized with a reward.

Re:Home is open again this weekend as well (right next door to Pine Creek). According to their Facebook post, they’ve added several new things since last weekend including furniture. We’re huge fans of our local merchants and the great shopping that they provide right here in our community. Read on for more information on a huge event being planned by the local merchant community for June 8th – 10th.

Avengers: Infinity War (PG-13) begins a two-weekend run tonight. Iron Man, Thor, the Hulk and the rest of the Avengers unite to battle their most powerful enemy yet—the evil Thanos. On a mission to collect all six Infinity Stones, Thanos plans to use the artifacts to inflict his twisted will on reality. The fate of the planet and existence itself has never been more uncertain as everything the Avengers have fought for has led up to this moment. On Wednesday, May 23rd, catch the hunky James Dean in the 1955 film Rebel Without a Cause (PG-13).

The Sons of Gladys Kravitz will be performing at Covered Bridges Winery on Saturday, May 19th, from 7:00 – 10:00 pm. The ‘Sons’ specialize in performing the very best music of the last 50 years, with letter-perfect renditions of classic songs from artists ranging from the Allman Brothers to ZZ Top—and many great artists in between. Music will be outside so bring a chair as seating is limited. Cover is $5 and food by Karam’s Mediterranean Grill will be available from 6:30 – 8:30 pm.

Coming Soon

Meet RoxAnn Rhoads, an avid gardener, at the Winterset Art Center for a presentation regarding the positive power of gardening. On Wednesday, May 23rd, from 2:00 – 3:00, RoxAnn will explain how the use of gardening can be the basis for relaxation and getting in touch with your inner self. Gardening is a powerful tool that will help you appreciate and be thankful for each and every day! This event is a part of the Wellness Wednesdays in Winterset program.

Join the conversation at the library on Thursday, May 24th, during their book discussion of The Underground Railroad by Colson Whitehead. New members are always welcome, and the library supplies copies for readers to check out. Rebecca Bock, teacher librarian with the WCSD, leads the discussion at 7:00 pm.

The Underground Railroad is being acclaimed as “one of the Best books of the Year” by The New York Times, The Washington Post, NPR, The Boston Globe, The Seattle Times, HuffPost, Esquire, and the Minneapolis Star Tribune

Cora is a young slave on a cottons plantation in Georgia. An outcast even among her fellow Africans, she is on the cusp of womanhood—where greater pain awaits. And so when Caesar, a slave who has recently arrived from Virginia, urges her to join him on the Underground Railroad, she seizes the opportunity and escapes with him.

In Colson Whitehead’s ingenious conception, the Underground Railroad is no mere metaphor: engineers and conductors operate a secret network of actual tracks and tunnels beneath the Southern soil. Cora embarks on a harrowing flight from one state to the next, encountering, like Gulliver, strange yet familiar iterations of her own world at each stop. As Whitehead brilliantly re-creates the terrors of the antebellum era, he weaves in the saga of our nation, from the brutal abduction of Africans to the unfulfilled promises of the present day. The Underground Railroad is both the gripping tale of one woman’s will to escape the horrors of bondage—and a powerful meditation on the history we all share.
