Weekend in Winterset, July 20th – July 22nd, 2018

The Winterset Citizen has gone abroad!

Half of our Winterset Citizen pair, Meisha, has been in Ireland for about a week now. Check out these photos from her first few days of travel!

This Weekend

The headlining activity this weekend is the Madison County Fair. For months, fair entrants have been working on projects and raising animals. Admission to the fair is free and you can see the fruits of all that hard work. Catch another night of exciting Rough Stock Rodeo action on Friday, July 20th at 8:00 pm, the Circle Track Mud Run on Saturday, July 21st at 7:00 pm, and the Mud Bog on Sunday, July 22nd at 7:00 pm. You can also catch the catch the Horseshoe Throwing Tournament on Sunday. On site registration is from 8:30 to 9:30 am and pitching begins at 10:00 am. The fee is $10. This event is sanctioned by the Iowa Hawkeye Horseshoe Pitchers. Click here for everything you need to know about the fair.

Everyone seems to be talking about how amazing Incredibles 2 is, so last weekend the Barrett family checked it out—it did not disappoint! Catch it for one more weekend at The Iowa.

Re:home is open again this weekend on the west side of the square. They can help if your home is in need of a summer pick-me-up.

Did you know that there is a cut flower farm in Winterset? PepperHarrow farm is located on South 4th Avenue (past the HS and Middle School). Most of their sales are to grocery stores and other wholesalers (you can usually find fresh PepperHarrow bouquets at the Winterset Hy-Vee) but they’re trying something new – Friday Flower Market. They’ll be set up at their farm from 10:00 to 6:00 on Fridays for direct sales of their vibrant and fresh bouquets.

Start your Saturday with some Yoga in the Park. Excellent for all ages groups, children to seniors, this yoga class meets at the north shelter at City Park from 9:30 to 10:30 am. Bring a mat or towel and water. No registration for the class is required. The $2 fee should be paid to the instructor on site.

The Winterset Art Center has another great opportunity this weekend, Covered Bridge Screen Printing. On Saturday, July 22nd, from 10:00 am – Noon, merge photography with printmaking to create a photographic screen print of a Madison County Covered Bridge. Learn about the four color printing process, then produce a work of art perfect for display or gifting. Class fee is $25 per person and the class is for ages 18 and up. Advance registration is required. Please email wintersetart2016@gmail.com to register.

Enjoy an evening of food, music and locally made Hard Apple Cider at the Winterset Cidery on Saturday, July 21st. Red Dirt Renegades is a 5 piece band that features a real Oklahoma cowboy on lead vocals, 3 part harmonies, and a pedal steel guitarist that’s a member of the Bluegrass Hall of Fame. They play an energetic set of modern Outlaw country like Chris Stapleton, Jamey Johnson, Cody, Blackberry Smoke plus classics by Waylon Jennings, Johnny Cash, Hank Williams Jr, Lynyrd Skynyrd and Marshall Tucker Band. Up in Smoke will begin serving at 5:30, the music plays from 7:00 to 10:00 and there is a $5 cover charge. Bring a lawn chair and your cowboy hat.

Coming Soon

Sally Wilke will present the Wellness Wednesdays in Winterset program on Wednesday, July 25th, from 6:00 to 7:00 pm at the Winterset Art Center. The topic is Creative Writing. Sally has been writing since childhood, including detailed diaries during adolescence and daily journals for the past forty-five years. She writes for herself, her family and friends, and for publication. Her first two books were written with her sister and described ways to create meaningful holiday experiences. When working in the substance abuse field, she wrote articles on prevention; when operating a youth services agency, she wrote stories about adolescents. See the pattern? Today, she writes monthly newsletter and newspaper articles as well as weekly sermons. Her book, Waiting for Good News, will be released in August, 2018.

This brief Wellness Wednesday Workshop will provide opportunities for participants to recognize and review their current writing practices. Experience your own sense of shalom as you explore journaling, letter writing, and other everyday forms of creative writing. There will be time for a little practice and discussion.

Downtown merchants will bust out the big savings on Friday, July 27th, and Saturday, July 28th, during the annual Krazy Dayz Sidewalk Sales. You may have to hunt for them, but there will be some great bargains on those sidewalks!

The Iowa Quilt Museum will close its current exhibit, Playing with Purpose: A Victoria Findlay Wolfe Retrospective, on Sunday, July 29th. An exhibit of Blue Ribbon Quilts of the Iowa State Fair will open on Tuesday, July 31st. This new exhibit will feature over two dozen former blue ribbon winners from previous years at the Iowa State Fair. Some that were even made by Madison County quilters.
