Weekend in Winterset, October 10 – 13, 2019

This Weekend

50th Annual Madison County Covered Bridge Festival

Saturday & Sunday • 10/12 & 10/13 • 9:00am – 5:00pm
“50 Years Through the Lens”

It comes as no shock to you, we’re sure, that the bulk of this weekend’s activities center around the 2019 Madison County Covered Bridge Festival! The festival is open on the town square from 9:00am to 5:0pm both Saturday and Sunday. Festival admission is $2.00 (Children 11 and under FREE). Since this year marks the 50th Anniversary of the festival, the theme is “50 Years through the Lens.” The festival committee has been working for months with the focus of highlighting the history of the festival. One of the unique ways they are celebrating this history is through a festival documentary that will be shown at The Iowa at 1pm, 2pm, 3pm and 4pm each day. When your feet need a little rest, head over there to watch it. There is no admission charge.

Remember that there are activities other places around town, too. Check out the Annual Horseshoe Tournament at the Madison County Fairgrounds, the Quilt Show at Winterset Elementary School, enjoy the “S’mores and popcorn” and Nighttime Civil War Cannon Firing at the Madison County Historical Complex or witness the Cedar Bridge Ribbon Cutting at the Cedar Bridge just north of Winterset at 5:oo pm on Saturday.  There is lots to do and see for every person in your family—visit the Covered Bridge Festival Schedule of Events for more information!

NOW Playing at the Iowa Theater

Hustlers

It’s been a while since Jennifer Lopez has generated Oscar buzz, but her performance in Hustlers(2019)is the talk of the town. This crime drama, adapted from a New York magazine article about a group of NYC strippers with a more-than-entrepreneurial streak, is not what it looks like based on the advertising. Working as a stripper to make ends meet, Destiny’s life changes forever when she becomes friends with Ramona — the club’s top money earner. Ramona soon shows Destiny how to finagle her way around the wealthy Wall Street clientele who frequent the club. But when the 2008 economic collapse cuts into their profits, the gals and two other dancers devise a daring scheme to take their lives back. Hustlers is a classic underdog story with its inspirations being far more Scorsese than Showgirls.  Rated R / 1 hr, 50 min

Dollar-A-Day Boys:  A Musical Tribute to the Civilian Conservation Corps

Tuesday, October 22, 6:30 p.m.
Winterset Public Library

Michigan-based author Bill Jamerson will present “Dollar-a-Day Boys,” a music and storytelling program about the Civilian Conservation Corps in Iowa. Dressed in uniform, Jamerson shares stories about the CCC, reads excerpts from his book, shows a video clip from his PBS film, and sings original songs with his guitar. It’s a nostalgic, fun-filled program of songs, laughter, and heartfelt stories. The CCC was a federal works program created by President Franklin Roosevelt in the heart of The Great Depression. During its nine-year run beginning in 1933, over 49,000 men served in Iowa. The men were 17-25 years of age. The camps were run by the army with an average of 29 camps in operation in Iowa for each year. Over 48 million dollars was spent in Iowa operating the camps. The enrollees were paid $1 a day with $25 sent home to their families each month. The money sent home provided relief for their families who were desperate for food and basic necessities.

Jamerson has performed at CCC reunions around the country and at dozens of CCC-built national and state parks. The program is as entertaining as it is important; as honest as it is fun. It’s about people both ordinary and extraordinary; with stories of strength, wit, and charm. In 2017, Jamerson was awarded “National CCC Educator of the Year,” by CCC Legacy based in Edinburg, VA.

This event is free and open to the public and no registration is required.
