Inaugural Global Movie Day

Saturday • February 8th

The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences founded Global Movie Day in 2020 to celebrate the power of movies to reach, connect, and inspire people across the globe. The Registrar at National Day Calendar® announced that Global Movie Day will be observed annually on the 2nd Saturday in February.

Right in the heart of Oscar season, the second Saturday in February celebrates Global Movie Day to honor the way movies have captured audiences’ hearts and minds around the world for over 100 years. Since their inception, movies have transcended geography, language, time, and culture, connecting us all through the power of storytelling.

Celebrate the Academy’s Global Movie Day by watching and discussing movies that have inspired you throughout the years. Share movie recommendations and discover ones you’ve never seen. Rewatch your favorite movies with friends or visit your local theater to see something new. Share the movies that have made an impression on you. Make your own “Top 10 Movies of All Time” list, catch up on this year’s Oscar nominees, and post your predictions. Enjoy Little Women at the Iowa this weekend (nominated for 6 Oscars including Best Picture and a Best Actress nod for Saoirse Ronan).

Showing at the Iowa Theater

Writer-director Greta Gerwig (Lady Bird) has crafted a Little Women that draws on both the classic novel and the writings of Louisa May Alcott, and unfolds as the author’s alter ego, Jo March, reflects back and forth on her fictional life. In Gerwig’s take, the beloved story of the March sisters – four young women each determined to live life on her own terms—is both timeless and timely. Portraying Jo, Meg, Amy, and Beth March, the film stars Saoirse Ronan, Emma Watson, Florence Pugh, Eliza Scanlen, with Timothée Chalamet as their neighbor Laurie, Laura Dern as Marmee, and Meryl Streep as Aunt March. PG, 2hr 15 min

A movie from 2004 (has it really been that long?!), set in 1940s South Carolina, mill worker Noah Calhoun (Ryan Gosling) and rich girl Allie (Rachel McAdams) are desperately in love. But her parents don’t approve. When Noah goes off to serve in World War II, it seems to mark the end of their love affair. In the interim, Allie becomes involved with another man (James Marsden). But when Noah returns to their small town years later, on the cusp of Allie’s marriage, it soon becomes clear that their romance is anything but over.  PG-13, 2hr 4 minutes

Black History Month Movie Matinees – Selma

Thursday • February 13 • 2:00 – 4:30pm
Winterset Public Library

Black History Month is an annual observance in February, celebrating the past and present achievements of African Americans.  This observance prompts us to remember important people, events, achievements, and contributions by African Americans to the arts, literature, sports, and pop culture. Join the library for some powerful, black history-based films. First up is Selma; although the Civil Rights Act of 1964 legally desegregated the South, discrimination was still rampant in certain areas, making it very difficult for blacks to register to vote. In 1965, an Alabama city became the battleground in the fight for suffrage. Despite violent opposition, Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. (David Oyelowo) and his followers pressed forward on an epic march from Selma to Montgomery, and their efforts culminated in President Lyndon Johnson signing the Voting Rights Act of 1965. All matinees are free. The library will provide free popcorn; please bring your own beverage.
