Oscar Nominated Film Series – Harriet

Join the library for their final showing in the Academy Award-nominee series, Harriett. Based on the thrilling and inspirational life of an iconic American freedom fighter, Harriett tells the extraordinary tale of Harriet Tubman’s escape from slavery and transformation into one of America’s greatest heroes. Her courage, ingenuity, and tenacity freed hundreds of slaves and changed the course of history. The library will provide free popcorn; bring your own beverage. This is a free program; no registration required.  Film is rated PG-13, 125 minutes.

Bring Love Ministry Benefit Concert

The Homestead Pickers will be leaving their Branson, Missouri, home and performing in Winterset instead on Friday, February 7th. The concert is a benefit for Bring Love Ministry, an organization that offer support for local foster and adoptive families. Local acts will be opening the concert and admission is a free will donation. This will be a great opportunity to both support Bring Love Ministry and enjoy great Bluegrass music and family fun!

Cabin Fever Gardening & Nature Series : Tomatoes & Peppers

Anyone who loves salsa or delicious BLTs won’t want to miss this program. Discover tasty tomato and pepper plant varieties that are new to you! Gardener & presenter Lewis Rothman has been an avid gardener since 1988 and has sold much of his produce at farmer’s markets over the years. His focus has been on peppers, tomatoes, & eggplants and he’s grown many unique varieties.  Last year, alone, he grew nearly 250 varieties of peppers and 15 varieties of tomatoes! This year he will be crossing his own peppers and growing Micro Dwarf tomatoes. Join Lewis as he shares about his gardening background, the basics of starting tomatoes and peppers from seed, the unique varieties he has grown, and find out which ones he would recommend trying in your own home garden! Lewis is a tomato and pepper enthusiast. He already has some tomato plants growing indoors, that only get 10” tall, and they have tomatoes on them! This is a free program at the Winterset Public Library and no registration is required.

Music at the Winery: Jason Walsmith of the Nadas

Jason Walsmith is a founding member and principal singer/songwriter of the Iowa based band The Nadas. Walsmith is known for his storytelling and heartfelt portraits of people and places in song. His solo performances range from intimate introspective songs to stomp and clap burners that keep the audience engaged and wondering what comes next. $5 Cover at the door, food by Easton’s Food Truck available 6:30-8:30pm • Music 7:00-10:00pm.

10th Annual General Trivia Night

Saturday • 2/8 • Doors open at 6:15pm, Trivia begins at 7:00pm
St. Joseph’s Catholic Church

Head out to St. Joseph’s Catholic Church Saturday night to enjoy a night of trivia. Questions are on a variety of topics; the theme “Antiques and Oldies” is for your enjoyment to dress up yourself and/or your table. Prizes for oldest (living) antique, best dressed individual best dressed/decorated team/table and more. Teams of up to 8 (ages 18 & older) are welcome. You can find information and forms to pre-register at saintjosephchurch.net or contact Mary at marykate2361@gmail.com. Pre-registration is preferred, but not required. Free bottled water and soda will be available, BYOB and bring your own snacks for your table. Beer and wine will be available also for donation. Proceeds will go to the American Legion Restoration Project and to the church.

Inaugural Global Movie Day

The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences founded Global Movie Day in 2020 to celebrate the power of movies to reach, connect, and inspire people across the globe. The Registrar at National Day Calendar® announced that Global Movie Day will be observed annually on the 2nd Saturday in February.

Right in the heart of Oscar season, the second Saturday in February celebrates Global Movie Day to honor the way movies have captured audiences’ hearts and minds around the world for over 100 years. Since their inception, movies have transcended geography, language, time, and culture, connecting us all through the power of storytelling.

Celebrate the Academy’s Global Movie Day by watching and discussing movies that have inspired you throughout the years. Share movie recommendations and discover ones you’ve never seen. Rewatch your favorite movies with friends or visit your local theater to see something new. Share the movies that have made an impression on you. Make your own “Top 10 Movies of All Time” list, catch up on this year’s Oscar nominees, and post your predictions. Enjoy Little Women at the Iowa this weekend (nominated for 6 Oscars including Best Picture and a Best Actress nod for Saoirse Ronan).
