Oscar Nominated Film Series – Parasite

Friday • January 31 • 2:00 – 4:30pm
Winterset Public Library

The third movie in the Library’s Oscar Nominated Film series will be Parasite on Friday, January 31st. Midway through the brilliant and deeply unsettling “Parasite,” a destitute man voices empathy for a family that has shown him none. “They’re rich but still nice,” he says, aglow with good will. His wife has her doubts. “They’re nice because they’re rich,” she counters. With their two adult children, they have insinuated themselves into the lives of their pampered counterparts. It’s all going so very well until their worlds spectacularly collide, erupting with annihilating force. Comedy turns to tragedy and smiles twist into grimaces as the real world splatters across the manicured lawn. Parasite received the prestigious Palme d’Or award at the Cannes Film Festival in 2019 and is nominated for the 2020 Academy awards of Best Movie, Best Director, Best Foreign Language Film, Best Original Screenplay, Best Production Design, and Best Film Editing.  This is an R rated movie.

This Weekend

Showing at the Iowa Theater

Rey, Finn and Poe are back; but so is Kylo Ren.  When it’s discovered that the evil Emperor Palpatine did not die at the hands of Darth Vader, the rebels must race against the clock to find out his whereabouts. Finn and Poe lead the Resistance to put a stop to the First Order’s plans to form a new Empire, while Rey anticipates her inevitable confrontation with Kylo Ren. PG-13, 2hr 22 min

The 1954 Academy Awards for Best Picture, Best Director, Best Actress in a Supporting Role, and Best Actor in a Supporting Role (among others, we think a total of 8) went to this classic film. Set at an Army barracks in Hawaii in the days preceding the attack on Pearl Harbor, lone-wolf soldier and boxing champion “Prew” Prewitt (Montgomery Clift) refuses to box, preferring to play the bugle instead. Hard-hearted Capt. Holmes (Philip Ober) subjects Prew to a grueling series of punishments while, unknown to Holmes, the gruff but fair Sgt. Warden (Burt Lancaster) engages in a clandestine affair with the captain’s mistreated wife (Deborah Kerr). Unrated, 1 hr 58 minutes

And Finally…

What is a caucus?

“A caucus is a neighborhood meeting,” said David Yepsen, former political writer at the Des Moines Register.  On caucus night, people gather at different sites and talk about why they’re supporting a candidate. Speeches are made on candidates’ behalf, and there’s jockeying to persuade other people to support their candidate. For Democrats in Iowa, caucus-goers publicly show support for their candidates after the speeches by moving to designated spaces in the space they’ve gathered. If a candidate does not get at least 15 percent of the room backing him or her, those supporters must go support another, viable candidate. For Republicans, after the speeches, there’s a secret ballot, no head counts.

Please consider participating in the Iowa Caucus on Monday, February 3rd. Democrats and Republicans should verify where to go according to your voting precinct and engage in some discussion about what matters most to you.
