Black History Month Movie Matinees – Race

Join the library for some powerful, black history-based films during Black History Month.

Race, the final film in the series, is the story of gold medal champion Jesse Owens.  Young Jesse Owens becomes a track and field sensation while attending the Ohio State University in the early 1930s. With guidance from his coach, Owens gains national recognition for breaking numerous records. After heated debates, the United States decides not to boycott the Olympics in Nazi Germany. Overcoming racism at home and abroad, Owens seizes the opportunity to show Berlin and the the world that he’s the fastest man alive.  All matinees are free. The library will provide free popcorn; please bring your own beverage.

Winterset Public Library

Stop by the library tomorrow and learn about George Crum, the inventor of the potato chip, and find out how to make this world famous junk food for yourself. Also, taste some really weird flavors and vote for your favorite. This is a free program and no registration is required.


Winterset Knights of Columbus – Annual Fish Fry

Join the Knights of Columbus at their Annual Fish Fry every Friday night during Lent (February 28 – March 20).  The ALL YOU CAN EAT dinner is $10 for adults, $5 for kids 12 and under. Family rates ARE available.

Join Covered Bridges Winery for BINGO night! It’s a great way to wind down after a long week at work. No charge to play bingo there will be small prizes for the winner of each game played.


Winterset Art Center Annual Pancake Breakfast Fundraiser

Winterset American Legion

The Winterset Art Center’s annual pancake breakfast fundraiser will be held on Saturday, February 29,  from 7:00 to 11:00am at the American Legion Hall in Winterset. At this free-will donation event, Winterset Art Center volunteers will serve pancakes, sausages, eggs and beverages. All donations will be used to continue their 2020 programs and help with the operations budget. In addition to the yummy breakfast, the Winterset Art Center will also be showcasing original art from young area artists!


Iowa Owls

Take advantage of Leap Day by joining Madison County Conservation Naturalist, Amy Warnke, for a wonderful nature program about Iowa Owls. This is a free program at the Winterset Public Library and no registration required.

Guitarist Bob Pace, who proudly led the Tuesday night house band at the legendary Blues On Grand for almost 20 years and Kathryn Fox will perform anything from rock tunes to gypsy jazz this Sunday at the Covered Bridges Winery. There is no cover charge for this event—if you like the music, please tip the musicians!

Gallery Walk & Reception: Doreen Speckmann Exhibit

Iowa Quilt Museum

Notable quilters Marianne Fons (Marianne Fons Public Page) and Judy Martin (Judy Martin Books) will lead a guided gallery walk through the current exhibit: Doreen Speckmann Remembered.  This colorful exhibit features over 30 works by noted teacher Doreen Speckmann, the quilts on display for the first time since her untimely death in 1999. Known for her wit and wisdom, as well as her teaching and publishing, Doreen led quilting cruises and used the world she explored as inspiration for her original designs. As friends and colleagues of Doreen’s, Marianne & Judy will have fun stories and memories to share while they walk you through the exhibit. Admission is $10 at the door.

Can’t make it in the morning? Join the Iowa Quilt Museum between 5:00 and 7:00pm on Saturday, March 7th as they celebrate this wonderful exhibit.  Light refreshments will be served at this reception which is free and open to the public.


Women’s History Movies

Winterset Public Library

Women’s History Month is an annual declared month that highlights the contributions of women to events in history and contemporary society. Beginning at 1:00 pm on Saturday, March 7 with “Suffragette”, set in early 20th century Britain, the growing suffragette movement forever changes the life of a working wife and mother as she joins a diverse group of women who fight for equality and the right to vote. All movies are free and there is no registration required. The library will provide free popcorn; please bring your own beverage.


Our Faith in Film Series

Beginning March 8th

Local churches will be partnering with the Iowa Theater again this year to provide the ‘Our Faith in Film’ series during the lenten season. These presentations will be on Sunday evenings at 5:30pm beginning with Overcomer on March 8th.


CRISP Movie Event

Thanks to the sponsorship from American State Bank, Farmers & Merchants State Bank, and Union State Bank, CRISP will be hosting a screening of Missing Link at the Iowa Theater on Sunday, March 15th, at 6:30pm. Admission is $5 per person, with ALL proceeds going to CRISP. This animated, comedy adventure is fun for the whole family. It would be a great way to start off Spring Break and support a wonderful local organization at the same time!
