Yay for new books!

John Wayne Birthplace & Museum has re-opened

Governor Reynolds has allowed museums, aquariums, zoos, etc. to re-open and the JWBM took advantage of that opportunity last Friday. Visitors to the museum and birthplace are required to wear masks and maintain social distancing standards. Today, May 26th, is the Duke’s 113th birthday.

The Iowa Quilt Museum will re-open on Monday, June 1st. The Madison County Historical Museum remains closed until further notice.

Virtual Programming from the Iowa Quilt Museum

TOMORROW

The Iowa Quilt Museum is continuing their weekly programming every Wednesday and on May 27th, at 3:30pm CDT, they will host a virtual meet-up with quilting legend Marti Michell.

For over 50 years, Marti Michell has been at the forefront of the quilting industry sharing tools and templates that help people create quilts with more quality and efficiency. Although she doesn’t typically call herself an artist, her desire to make something, and help people make things they could live with forever, led her to create a business that has had an indelible impact on the quilting industry.

In addition to wearing the roles of teacher, lecturer, writer, publisher, and mentor, Marti and her husband Richard have amassed a beautiful collection of antique quilts. One of their quilts, made by Jacob Schaffner in 1890, is currently on loan to the Iowa Quilt Museum for our Man Made exhibit.

It’s not every day that one gets the opportunity to be on a Zoom meeting with Marti Michell so mark your calendars now and join us using the information below.

Madison County Airing of the Quilts WILL Happen!

The IQM also announced this week that they WILL hold their annual event, the Madison County Airing of the Quilts. The date has been moved to Saturday, June 27th, and ALL of the exhibits will be outdoors to allow for social distancing, but how neat that they will still provide a unique opportunity for quilt lovers (and nature lovers, and history lovers, and, really, anyone!) to enjoy the beauty of both quilts and Madison County in a safe and enjoyable way!

Summer Conservation Camps

Online Registration Happening Now

Madison County Conservation is offering a variety of summer camps again this year with some changes that will make them look a little different from years past. All camps will be run entirely outdoors with pick up and drop off located in the picnic area next to the nature center. All camps will focus heavily on outdoor activities including hiking, fishing, bird watching, frog catching, exploring Middle River, and more. There will also be outdoor based games and crafts. Group sizes will be limited this year to maintain the 10 or fewer guidelines with campers and staff.

To view a listing of summer camps or register online, visit MyCountyParks.com. Please call the Madison County Conservation office with summer camp questions at 515-462-3536 or send an e-mail to naturalist@madisoncountyparks.org.

Virtual Art with Winterset Parks & Recreation

Friday • June 5th

The Winterset Parks & Recreation is joining the hordes of organizations that are finding the need to think creatively about how to offer virtual programming right now. We think they’ve come up with a great idea in this Virtual Art (Watercolor & Calligraphy) project.

Participants can choose from one of these three different designs and complete the project with a guided video composed by local high school artist Carli Clifton. Once registered you will be notified when to pick up your art supplies for these projects and sent the link for the guided video. Email your completed project to davisr@cwmu.net so we can display them on our Facebook page. The $15 feel includes all of the supplies you will need for the project. Registration ends June 1 and can be found online through the Winterset Parks & Recreation.

Pride of Winterset [Virtual] Variety Show

Earlier year, The Winterset Stage and the Winterset Lions Club announced that there would be a ‘passing of the torch’ for the spring variety show that we had known as the Lions Show for the past 70 years. The Winterset Stage was preparing to produce the Pride of Winterset Variety Show in mid-April but, of course, that was cancelled.

However…thanks to the wonders of modern technology, The Winterset Stage is currently hosting a virtual version of the variety show on their Facebook Page featuring talent from across our community. If you’re not on Facebook, you can find the videos on the Winterset Stage website instead. Head to one of those locations and check out some talented individuals!
