Twister

Playing this weekend at the Iowa Theater
Friday & Saturday • 7:00pm

Although films are scheduled weeks in advance, considering the crazy storm that swept through Iowa on Monday, it seems pretty ironic that Twister is on screen at the Iowa Theater this week!

During the approach of the most powerful storm in decades, university professor Dr. Jo Harding (Helen Hunt) and an underfunded team of students prepare the prototype for Dorothy, a ground-breaking tornado data-gathering device conceived by her estranged husband, Bill (Bill Paxton). When Harding tells Bill that Dorothy is ready for testing — and that their privately funded rival Dr. Jonas Miller (Cary Elwes) has stolen the idea and built his own — Bill rejoins the team for one last mission.

The Iowa also shared published the following statement this morning regarding a political ad that some of you may have seen:

We learned yesterday that an image of the Iowa’s marquee is being used in a political attack ad. We did not give permission for this image to be used and are furious that our marquee, and the encouraging message it shared during our closure, would be used in such a negative way.

The Iowa is a nonprofit organization, a place for everyone in the community, regardless of your political party, persuasion or opinions. Our marquee is meant to be a beacon of light and joy, and seeing it used in this way is incredibly upsetting.

Thank you to all who alerted us. We have consulted our lawyer about our options to demand the image be removed from the ad.

Virtual Gallery Walk – Part TWO

Monday • August 17th • 12:30pm
Iowa Quilt Museum’s “Out of Control Exhibit”

Last Monday the Iowa Quilt Museum hosted a virtual gallery walk of their Out of Control exhibit but the presenters and participants had so much to talk about that they only made it through half of the quilts! So, they’re meeting up again on Monday, August 17th to finish the tour!

Wild quilts from quilt collectors with a special affinity for the “odd” populate the exhibit currently on display at the Iowa Quilt Museum. The patterns, color choices, designs, and even the workmanship will leave you wondering, “What was she thinking?”

Join curators Barbara Brackman and Deb Rowden, plus special guests Julie Silber and Joe Cunningham, for Part TWO of this virtual gallery walk through the ‘Out of Control’ exhibit. The first 100 guests will be able to login in to the Zoom meeting, allowing them to interact with the presenters and submit questions and comments through the chat feature. This online event is offered free of charge but donations to the Iowa Quilt Museum are welcome and appreciated.

Join Zoom Meeting
https://zoom.us/j/96761926850
Meeting ID: 967 6192 6850

If you’re not able to make it to the live event, you can catch the recording which will be uploaded to the IQM website. If you didn’t see Part ONE of the gallery walk, you can also find it on their website.

The Iowa Quilt Museum has also issued a Quilt Challenge in conjunction with their current exhibit.

The idea was born when on of the IQM’s volunteer docents reported for her shift last week and brought with her a quilt top that she had recently designed and pieced. The design for the quilt was inspired by one of the pieces in the ‘Out of Control’ exhibit!

The IQM decided to issue a challenge to encourage other quilters to create designs inspired by quilts in the exhibit.

Now don’t be scared off by the word challenge, it’s really quite easy and fun! Here’s what you do…

  1. Find a quilt in this exhibit that you feel especially drawn to. You can look through the slide show on their website for your inspiration or, better yet, visit in person!
  2. Use this quilt as inspiration for a design of your own; not a copy of the original!
  3. Send the IQM an email with a photo of our quilt top and the following information:
    • Your Name
    • City and State where you live
    • What ‘Out of Control’ quilt inspired you
    • A short paragraph about yourself and your quilt!

The deadline for submissions is midnight on September 20th. The IQM will share a slide show of all of the ‘entries’ on September 28th and encourage their online community to comment and vote for their favorites!

If you have any questions, contact IQM Director Megan Barrett at director@IowaQuiltMuseum.org. That’s where entries should be sent, too!
