The alley on the east side of the square is going to host an awesome new mural. This vintage postcard is just the beginning, eventually it will stretch all the way to the back of the building. Keep your eyes peeled over the next week as Jimmy brings this art to life—he’s really fast!

If you don’t have a voucher to watch the Huskies in the stadium tonight as they go head to head with North Polk in the first round of the football playoffs, grab a coke and some popcorn and watch it live online instead. You can catch the game on the WHS events YouTube channel, and find some previous events as well, like the Husky Marching Bank State festival performance which was recorded last Saturday.

The WHS dance team is pulling double duty this weekend! If you’ve got cans that need to be redeemed, they’ll be glad to take them off your hands this Sunday or next, from 10:00 am to 1:00 pm. Drop cans off at the old Dollar General parking lot on John Wayne Drive or email wintersetdance@gmail.com to arrange for a home pick-up.

Fossil Hunting

Middle River County Park
When it comes to fossils, Madison County is a geological gold mine. The sand bars exposed by Middle River, are littered in limestone pieces that contain an abundance of fossils. The most abundant fossil found in our local limestone is the crinoid. Crinoids were sea-dwelling creatures that lived a sedentary lifestyle on the bottom of the ocean floor approximately 350 million years ago. Also known as sea lilies, crinoids had a large flower–like head that was used to filter food out of the water. The head was connected to a long stem leading down to a set of roots that held the creature to the sea floor.
As we enter October, the water levels in Madison County are usually a little lower exposing many of the local sandbars. Add in cooler day time temperatures, and you have the perfect conditions for fossil hunting. Each time the sandbars are covered by flowing water, new fossil finding opportunities are created as the moving water turns over and exposes a new layer of rock. With recent rainfall, our local sandbars should be littered with new fossils.
This family-friendly event, sponsored by Madison County Conservation and Wellness Wednesdays in Winterset, is free and open to people of all ages. Fossil hunting is an activity that is fun for all ages so adults are welcome to join the fun. You do not need to bring a child to participate.
Preregistration is required for this event. Participants should meet at the Middle River Shelter for a short presentation on fossils and how they are formed prior to fossil hunting. Since we will be walking up and down the stream bed, rubber boots or old shoes that can get wet are a must for this activity. Slime Time

Winterset Parks & Recreation
Kids in Kindergarten through fourth grade are invited for a gooey good time making slime! This event will be held at the WPRD park maintenance building to provide adequate spacing for participants. Space is limited so register today. Registration deadline in October 19th. (The park maintenance building is located near the City Park campground, south of the Martin Marietta softball fields. Use the access road for the campground, 10th Street.)
Fright Night • Spooktacular Stories

Hosted by The Winterset Stage at the Madison County Historical Complex
The Winterset Stage is hosting a Spooktacular Storytelling Event outdoors at the Madison County Historical Complex next Saturday, October 24th, with performances at 5:00 and 7:00.
A night of fright awaits you in this open-air spooky story festival featuring a mixture of classic, modern and original stories performed as Readers’ Theater. Bring a lawn chair and blanket plus your own food and drink OR make it easy on yourself and order a catered meal. You’ll also find popcorn and s’mores on site!
Tickets are $15 per carload so pack up the whole family! Tickets can be purchased online in advance or at the event. Meals must be ordered in advance and are $15 per person (gourmet sandwich and choice of four sides).
Howl-O-Ween

Winterset Dog Park
Get ready to have a howling good time at the Winterset Dog Park. Dog owners, dress up with your dog or just dress your dog up for a chance to win a gift basket from Cedar Creek Animal Clinic or the Winterset Veterinary Center. Show off your doggie tricks and enjoy playing with your pet. All dogs must be up to date on vaccines and rabies shots in order to attend this event.
Information will be available at the event about dog park use and registering your dog. Cedar Creek Animal Clinic will be on site with information about their services and to answer any questions you may have about the care of your pet. There is no cost, but registration is required. Participants are to observe the Winterset City restricted dog breed ordinance.
