Wellness Wednesdays in Winterset

The Wellness Wednesdays in Winterset is a program coordinated by a group of organizations and individuals dedicated to encouraging area residents to become healthier. It began a number of years ago as the Start Somewhere Wa1K, which was instituted by the State of Iowa as the key component to the Healthiest State Initiative. Organizers about 5 years ago decided to provide not only the walk around the clock (four trips around the outside of the square equals about 1K), but provide additional information to feed the body and soul on the other Wednesdays from May through October. Due to COVID 19, in 2020, the walks were held, but the informational sessions were done virtually. This year they are “back to normal.”

Wellness Wednesday in Winterset programs will kick off June 2, at Noon, with the monthly “First Wednesday, Walk around the Clock.” Guest “DJ” for the 2021 inaugural walk is Amara Huffine, recently hired Executive Director of the Madison County Chamber of Commerce. She has selected a playlist she entitles “Summer Hits!”

Lunch and Learns will be the offerings for the remainder of the Wednesdays in June. All sessions will be about an hour and held in the Community Meeting room at the Winterset Public Library, 123 N. Second Street. The library asks that if you are experiencing symptoms of Covid 19 to refrain from attending. You may certainly bring and enjoy your lunch if your schedule so dictates.

June 9 • Brian Downes & The Duke

In 2007 Winterset pulled out the stops and celebrated the 100th Birthday of native son John Wayne. If you think back on that wonderful weekend, you may remember the recreation of the old-fashioned Wild West exhibition as were staged in the late 1800s and into the 1900s. The organizers called upon, and enlisted, a gentleman who was on the Chicago Tribune staff and an experienced showman in his own right. He pulled in a wonderful collection of entertainers, and at the same time showed his devotion to John Wayne. Shortly thereafter, Brian Downes, that same promoter of the Wild-West and John Wayne, was hired to be the Executive Director of the John Wayne Birthplace & Museum, a position he still holds! Join us as Brian gives us an little overview of not only how he got here, but his “Day with the Duke” as a young reporter, the friendships he’s created with many of the co-stars of the Duke, such as Harry Carey, Jr. and Maureen O’Hara, his experiences meeting Duke fans across the globe, and the expansion of the galleries at the museum; to be featured at the event in May of 2022.

June 16 • Hidden Hunger with Mary Krisco

Mary Krisco is the ISU Extension WIN Coordinator (Wellness and Independence through Nutrition) for adults 50+. Hunger is a hidden problem among Iowans aged 50 and older. When older Iowans are admitted to hospitals, one out of four are found to have malnourishment that interferes with their recovery. One reason that so many older adults are malnourished is that they can’t afford healthy food. Yet, of all the older adults who are eligible for Iowa Food Assistance, less than 40% actually apply for it. The WIN Program is an ISU Extension campaign to convince older adults to get the food help they need. If you are over 50, chances are you know an older adult who is at risk for malnutrition. Come to this presentation to find out how you can help combat this hidden hunger.

June 23 • Secret Services of the Second Floor

Aaron Richardson, RN, BSN and Director of Rehab Services and Chronic Disease Management at Madison County Memorial Hospital will share about the many great services available to us right here in Winterset from the professionals at our local hospital!
