Grab a lawn chair, a cold lemonade or iced tea, and head on out to ‘the hill’ to take in some great music tonight. If I were a betting woman, I’d wager there will be a fair amount of patriotic music in celebration of Independence Day this weekend!

Wellness Wednesdays in Winterset:
Walk around the Clock

Wednesday • 7/7 • Noon to 1:00
Winterset Town Square

Since this will be the first Wednesday of the month, it’s time for another Walk Around the Clock. Guest DJ this time is Chris Nolte who has put together a selection of Sousa Marches.

John Philip Sousa (November 6, 1854 – March 6, 1932) was an American composer and conductor, known primarily for American military marches. He is actually known as “The March King.” He wrote over 130 marches, 15 operettas, 5 overtures, 11 suites, 24 dances, 28 fantasies, and countless arrangements of nineteenth-century western European symphonic works. Among his best-known marches are “The Stars and Stripes Forever” (National March of the United States of America), “Semper Fidelis” (official march of the United States Marine Corps), “The Liberty Bell“, “The Thunderer“, and “The Washington Post“.

These pieces will be sure to energize you as you get some steps in over the noon hour. Remember that four times around the square is approximately 1 kilometer.

Way Back Wednesdays at The Iowa

Exhibit Reception Brunch & Lecture

Saturday • 7/10 • 10:30 – 11:30am
Iowa Quilt Museum

The Iowa Quilt Museum has recently opened a new exhibit of contemporary art quilts that are celebrating the 40th Anniversary of the Manhattan Quilters Guild in NYC. In light of the major improvements in COVID cases and COVID vaccine rates, the museum is ready to return to their tradition of holding a reception at the museum in conjunction with each new exhibit.

This reception will be held on Saturday morning, July 10th, from 10:30 – 11:30 am with light brunch food being served. The reception itself is free and open to the public. At 12:00, Meg Cox, a quilt journalist and member of the Manhattan Quilters Guild, will share a virtual lecture about the exhibit. Tickets for the lecture are $10 and participants have the option of viewing it upstairs at the IQM or at home. (You can even watch recording at a later date if you’re not able to attend the live presentation.)

Broadway LIVE

Friday • 7/16 – 7:00pm
Saturday • 7/17 – 2:00pm and 7:00pm

Broadway at The Iowa is a special musical event happening at the Iowa Theater July 16 and 17, including one performance on Friday (7 p.m.) and two on Saturday (2 p.m. and 7 p.m.).

The once-vaudeville stage of Winterset’s historic theater will be filled with the sights and sounds of four Broadway performers, as they share their favorite musical theater tunes during each one-hour show. Piano accompaniment will be provided by Sonya Siebert, Drake University music department faculty member.

The vocalists are traveling to Iowa expressly to benefit the Iowa Theater. Once Broadway reopens this fall, they will be back onstage in New York making this a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity only possible as a result of the pandemic. (silver lining!)

We posted an entire edition about this even a couple of weeks ago. If you missed it, you can read the full post here.
