MCHS Seeking Feedback from Citizens!

“Madison County Historical Society (MCHS) is in the process of completing a strategic plan and a major piece of this process is community input. MCHS is here to serve Madison County and we want to know what you think,” says Jared McDonald, Museum Director at MCHS.

Therefore, MCHS is asking Madison County citizens to complete a Community Survey. The Community Survey is available online through the middle of September and will help MCHS understand the needs of the Madison County community in order to make changes and improvements to the museum.

I completed the survey this morning and it took me just about five minutes. I encourage you to take a few minutes to provide your feedback as well!

Covered Bridges Winery

The Winterset Bras for the Cause Organization is inviting you to their Party on the Paddock this Saturday. They won’t be holding their regular event in October this year, so they hope to see a lot of friendly, and generous, folks at this event instead!

The party will take place on the patio at Covered Bridges Winery from 1:00 to 6:00pm with music provided by Looking for Luke and food, like Kentucky Burgoo (a spicy stew), from Easton’s Food Truck.

In keeping with the derby theme, you can participate in the Derby Hat Contest by coming up with the biggest, funniest, or most elaborate head covering. You can also get your picture taken with Minnie the mini horse.

There is no cover, but donations are appreciated. Funds raised by the Bras for the Cause organization help Madison County women who are un-insured or underinsured receive mammograms and other screening procedures.

Soil & Water Conservation, Local Working Group Meeting

Monday • September 14th • 7:00pm
Madison County Soil & Water Conservation District, Virtual Meeting

The Madison County Soil and Water Conservation District (SWCD) is holding a virtual Local Working Group meeting on Monday, September 14th at 7:00pm on Zoom and invites the public to participate. Participants MUST REGISTER by 4:30pm on Friday, September 11 by calling or emailing SWCD (see details below).

Madison County SWCD is developing its long-term Soil and Water Resource Conservation Plan, which will guide their focus and actions for the next five years. In an effort to truly reflect the resources and the conservation issues and objectives our of county, the commissioners are striving for a “locally led” process and seeking input from the public.

The Local Working Group will meet in a facilitated meeting to discuss and prioritize the conservation issues and goals for the district. Focus will be on the following areas: soil resources, water resources, recreation and wildlife resources, and land management.

This “locally-led” process ensures that the conservation needs identified by Madison County citizens will be heard by elected officials, and planning will be guided by local needs and priorities. In addition to identifying priorities for the SWCD, the Soil and Water Resource Conservation Plan will be able to provide information for updates to the Madison County Comprehensive Plan. Conservation activities may originate with an interest in protecting our soil, water, and other natural resources, but conservation practices and programs may also provide benefits for roads, streams, and other infrastructure.

The Madison County SWCD and its partners, including the Natural Resources Conservation Service and the Iowa Department of Agriculture and Land Stewardship, work together to support farmers and landowners in conservation of our natural resources, but input from the local community will be key for prioritizing the goals and objectives for the next five years.

To participate in this meeting, please register by 4:30pm on Friday, September 11 by calling the Madison County SWCD at 515-462-2961 x3 or sending an email to Megan.Sutton@ia.nacdnet.net. Registrants will be provided participation information (link to Zoom meeting, or phone number to call in). For more information about Madison County SWCD, visit www.madison-swcd.org.

Finally

A musical serenade from some young Winterset Citizens

https://youtu.be/lcZunsLVEBo

Each year, the WHS Drama and Music Departments participate in the Iowa High School Musical Theater Awards. This year-long program, administered by Des Moines Performing Arts, consists of three main components:

  • Professional Review – Each participating musical production receives a professional review by a panel of performing arts educators and professionals. Teachers and students use these insights to make their next show even stronger.
  • Learning Opportunities – Throughout the school year, workshops led by theater professionals help students grow. While some sessions focus on performance skills, others focus on technical areas such as lighting design, scenic design, and stage management.
  • Awards Showcase – Based on reviewer scores and nominations, outstanding musicals and performers are invited to share highlights from their productions. Rehearsals with a guest Broadway music director and choreographer prepare students for impressive opening and closing numbers and awards and recognitions are given throughout the evening.

Since the Awards Showcase was cancelled this past spring, the IHSMTA collected student submissions for a “What Really Matters” virtual choir project instead. Christopher D. Littlefield, the 2019 Awards Showcase Music Director, was commissioned to write a piece in response to productions being canceled and this project was the result.
