If you’re an experienced Winterset Wine Walk attendee, then you know there will be a commemorative wine glass included in the price of your ticket for this Saturday’s event. And if you’ve been going since it began, you can add this to your collection for a set of four!
If you haven’t been to the Winterset Wine Walk before, this is how it works. First, purchase your tickets in advance at the Chamber Office at 73 Jefferson Street, open 9:00 to 4:00 today and Saturday, or online here for $15 each. Make it a date night, a girls’ night out with friends, or a treat for Mom. Tickets are limited, but there are still some available at this time. Get yours before they’re sold out!
Then, sometime between 4:00 and 7:00 on Saturday evening (the earlier the better!), stop by the Chamber Office to begin your wine walk experience. If you’ve registered online, they’ll have your name on a check-in list and be all ready to provide your wristband and wine glass for sampling at the 21 different locations participating around the square. Just wander around, enjoy a sip here and there, and see what’s for sale. You’ll also receive a tote bag full of goodies from the Madison County merchants and a $5.00 coupon toward the purchase of your favorite bottle of wine.
In addition to sampling wine at each station, many of the merchants are offering special drawings and deals throughout the evening. For example, Ben Franklin will have a free drawing to win this wine-themed set of placemats and table-runner, made by Judy Trask.
At re:home, which is open this weekend through Saturday, artist Jeff Tadsen will be doing free personalizations of any of his items that you purchase at the store. He will also have 50 flower pots that he will be painting on demand in the store the same day (starting at 9:00 am), ’til 6:00 pm. There are two flower design options to choose from.

And finally, before you go home for the evening, stop back at the Chamber Office to show them how many participating locations you visited. (They’ll give you a map for this purpose when you start out.) If you got to all of them, you’ll get to choose from a very eclectic collection of corkscrews and take home one to keep. This was very popular at last year’s event! Kevin Fifo of Covered Bridges Winery managed to obtain a large batch of corkscrews that had been confiscated by airport security, and each one is unique. You might find one from a vineyard in California, a casino in Vegas, or a resort in the Bahamas. The lesson: Finish the Wine Walk, and and don’t take a corkscrew in your carry-on luggage, or it might end up as someone else’s prize!

If you enjoy volleyball, join the Winterset Park and Recreation Department’s Coed Sand Volleyball Tourney. Sign up in teams of four: two men and two women. Champion T-shirts will be awarded to 1st place, and all proceeds go to the Winterset Dog Park fund. Registration ends today (May 6th). Fee is $40 per team.
The First United Methodist Church is hosting a Mother’s Day Brunch this Saturday morning at the Historical Building from 8:00 to 11:00 am, or until the food is gone.
Bring your coloring books and colors to The Cellar at 111 S 1st Ave. this evening from 6:00 to 8:00 pm. Coffee & Coloring will support the American Cancer Society with a tax deductible $25 donation for the 2016 Relay for Life of Madison County. Iowa Author Richard Fleming will be speaking at the final Tuesday Talk at the Winterset Library on May 10th at 6:30 pm. The subject of Fleming’s work of historical fiction is Lewis Wetzel, frontiersman and Indian fighter in Virginia in the 1700’s. At the age of 13, Wetzel and his 11 year old brother were taken prisoner by the Indians and managed to escape. Wetzel lived an eventful life, and is considered similar to Daniel Boone. This presentation is free and open to the public.
CrafterSchool at the Library will meet again on Wednesday, May 11th from 3:30 to 4:30 pm. Youth ages nine and up will be making artistic masks with a crazy artistic flair during the May session of CrafterSchool. Spaces are limited. Call the Library to reserve your seat. This program is free and open to youth ages 9 and up.

Madison County Health Care System is excited to partner with the Winterset Dog Park committee to co-host a 5K walk/run and Dog Jog on Saturday, May 14, 2016 in Winterset’s City Park. Proceeds from the event will help fund the proposed Dog Park for Winterset, and there will be events for the whole family (including the dog). A bounce house, courtesy of Breedings Hardware, a sand volleyball tournament hosted by Winterset Parks and Recreation, The Hy-Vee Healthy You Mobile, and a variety of displays by Madison County groups and organizations will make this a celebration of healthy living. Registration begins at 7:30 am with the events kicking off at 8:30 am. You may register online by going here. There is a fee of $25.00 (after April 22 the fee goes to $35.00). All registrants for the 5K will receive a commemorative tee-shirt if they register by April 30. Team registration for the sand volleyball tournament will be $40.00 and may be made by contacting Winterset Parks and Recreation Department, which will also contribute the net proceeds to the Dog Park Project.
