Weekend in Winterset • November 19

Introducing

Cedar Lake Trail

Winterset and Madison County residents and visitors can now enjoy a 3.2-mile hiking trail ALL the way around the Lake! This project has been years in the making and started with the relocation of the historic 1911 Jurgensen Bridge across the spillway. The addition of a paved trail connecting the Cedar Lake Rock Road to Jurgensen Bridge was recently completed, and the Nature Trail was constructed and designed to finalize the trail. This is a nature trail so it does have varying changes in elevation and some uneven terrain. There’s even a human powered raft for crossing the creek!

The Winterset Parks & Recreation department offers their thanks to Winterset Municipal Utilities, Greater Madison County Community Foundation, Former Director of Parks and Recreation John Pletchette, Winterset Parks and Recreation Board, Madison County Conservation Board for loaning canoes to use during the project and most importantly YOU the residents of Winterset for telling them you would like more trails in the area with assistance from Madison County, Iowa Heart & Soul!

Even though the signs says that the lake and trail are closed as of November 1st, Cedar Lake and the trail will remain open until the weather does not allow. Get out and enjoy before the snow starts to fall!

New Exhibit at the Iowa Quilt Museum

Here Comes the Sun

On display through January 23rd
Curated by Joe Cunningham

To combat the winter blahs, the Iowa Quilt Museum has just unveiled their latest exhibit which is a celebration of the color orange: Here Comes the Sun. Guest curator Joe Cunningham writes:

Over the last 250 years of quilt history in the United States, the color orange has risen and fallen in popularity several times, but even at its peak popularity it has never been a predominant color in quilts. Today, while it is easy to find the color in a quilt, many people find orange either unpleasant or off-putting. Not for me. The first quilt I ever bought was the bow tie in this show, so unloved in the dealer’s booth that the price was reduced to the point where even a young guitar player/quilter could afford it. Citrus, the rising sun, pumpkins, cheddar cheese—some of my favorite things in life are orange. According to the sources I find on the internet, it can represent almost anything, from serenity and peace to fire and war. For me, it represents happiness and joy. These quilts represent but a small number of the innumerable ways quilters have employed the color orange.

Joe Cunningham, curator of “Here Comes The Sun”

Visit the Iowa Quilt Museum and bask in the glow of orange as you view traditional, modern, and vintage quilts using this color that can mean so many things. The IQM is open Monday to Saturday from 10:00am to 4:00pm and Sundays Noon to 4:00.
