Pumpkin Carving Bash

Winterset Public Library

There’s still time to join the FREE pumpkin carving event held at the Winterset Public Library this evening! The event is designed for adults, but children are welcome as well. All supplies are provided by the Friends of Winterset Public Library. There is a limit of 10 participants for this event. Sign up using the button below or call the library at 515-462-1731.


Surrealism Art Lesson

Saturday • October 30 • 10:30 – 11:30am (grades 1-3) OR 1:00 – 3:00pm (grade 4 & up)
Winterset Art Center

Paint your own surrealist Halloween landscape this Saturday at the Winterset Art Center. This is the first of four Saturday Art Lessons at the WAC being taught by Sarah Macht. The morning session is intended for younger students in 1st through 3rd grades, and will be held from 10:30 to 11:30 am. Cost is $6. The afternoon session is for students in 4th grade and up, including adults, and will be held from 1:30 to 3:30 pm. Cost is $15.00. All supplies are provided.

Each week’s art lesson will focus on a famous artist and style. Here are topics of the other weeks so you can plan ahead!

November 6 – Chagall Dreamscapes
November 13 – Van Gogh’s Starry Night
November 20 – Pointilism

Winterset’s downtown merchants will welcome ghouls and goblins from 3:30 to 5:00pm before they head out into community at large from 5:00 to 7:00pm

Remember to vote in the City & School Board elections on Tuesday, November 2nd. Polls will be open from 7:00am to 8:00pm. If you need to find you polling location, click the button below. If you want to vote on Monday, you can do that at the Madison County Courthouse. It’s super fast and super easy, just be sure you have your photo ID with you.


Thoroughly Modern Millie

Friday & Saturday • November 5th & 6th
Winterset High School, Henry C. Miller Auditorium

Over eighty-five WHS students have been working for the past several weeks to prepare their upcoming performances of Thoroughly Modern Millie. They will present their production next weekend with a show on Friday at 7:00pm and two performances on Saturday at 2:00pm and 7:00pm.

Set in New York City in 1922, Thoroughly Modern Millie tells the story of young Millie Dillmount from Kansas, who comes to New York in search of a new life for herself. Her grand plan is to find a job as a secretary for a wealthy man and then marry him. However, her plan goes completely awry. The owner of her dingy hotel kidnaps young girls to sell to the Far East, her wealthy boss is slow in proposing marriage and the man she actually falls in love with doesn’t have a dime to his name… or so he tells her.

Tickets are $8 and are available at the door.

Madison County Music Co. will start a new lesson term on Monday, November 8th, making this a GREAT time to start lessons or join a class. They’re offering several new options for this new term…

New Beginner Guitar Class
A new class for brand-new beginner guitar students (Tuesdays, 4:30 to 5:00.) 
Ukulele Classes
THREE Ukulele classes are available this term! One intended for brand-new beginners | Mondays 3:10 to 3:40Another intended for beginners who attended the “intro” class at the Winterset Public Library | Mondays 3:40 to 4:10The third for adult beginners | Tuesdays 5:30 – 6:00 
Music Together
“Music together” are parent and child classes and are offered for two age groups (birth to 3 and ages 3-5) and at two different times each.

Guys Power Sing & Totally Treble Festival

Saturday • November 13th • 9:00am – 3:00pm

Winterset High School with Madison County Music Co. and Heartland Youth Choir

Anyone who enjoys singing is invited to join the Madison County Music Co., Heartland Youth Choir and the Winterset High School Vocal Music department for a day of music-making on Saturday, November 13th. The Guys Power Sing and Totally Treble Festival will be held concurrently at Winterset High School led clinicians Sandy Miller, Artistic Director of Heartland Youth Choir, Megan Barrett, director of HYC Madison County, Jon Barrett, WHS Vocal Director, and Jim Cacciatore, Associate Conductor of Heartland Youth Choir.

Two groups of guest artists will also share in the festival: Remedy & Vox Infinitus, a cappella groups from Des Moines, who will prepare a special arrangements for the festival choirs.

The day will conclude with a free public concert at 2:30pm including performances from the Totally Treble Festival and Guys Power Sing choirs, Remedy and Vox Infinitus. Registration is $20 which includes music, a t-shirt, instruction & lunch. The festivals are open to singers in 5th grade through adult. Register by October 30th using the button below.


Optimist Turkey Dinner

The prodigal dinner returns! The Winterset Optimist Club is making plans for the reincarnation of this long-held tradition. Dinner will be served from 11:00 am to 1:30 pm on Sunday, November 14th, at Winterset High School. The menu will include turkey, ham, mashed potatoes, dressing, vegetables, cranberry sauce, rolls and plenty of desserts. Tickets are $12 for adults, $5 for school-aged children 12 and under and pre-school aged children are free. Tickets are available at Farmers & Merchants State Bank, Union State Bank, American State Bank, from any Optimist Club Member, or at the door.

Youth Basketball League Registration

Winterset Parks & Recreation

Registration is now open for both of our youth basketball programs. The youth basketball league will again be partnering with Adel Parks and Recreation, Van Meter Parks and Recreation, and Perry Parks & Recreation Department. The league is open for boys and girls in grades 1st – 6th grade.

The Lil’ Husky basketball program in partnership with Winterset Huskies is available for those boys and girls who are in Pre-K (kindergarten next year) or currently enrolled in kindergarten! Registration for both programs is only $30 per participant and includes a t-shirt or a basketball.


Adult Pickle Ball League Registration

Winterset Parks & Recreation Department

Rally your friends and join one of the fastest growing sports in America! The rules are simple, and the game is easy for beginners to learn, but can develop into a quick fast-paced, competitive match. Winterset Parks & Recreation is hosting an indoor league this winter which will include men, women & co-ed divisions. Registration fee is $30 per team.
