Planes, Trains & Automobiles

Saturday • 11/21 • 7:00pm
At the Iowa Theater

Seating at The Iowa is now limited to 15 per showing pursuant to Gov. Reynolds’ latest proclamation. Purchase your tickets ONLINE and/or arrive early to ensure your seat. Doors open at 6:30.

There won’t be a movie next Wednesday but there are three chances to get a dose of Elf over the holiday weekend!

Easily excitable Neal Page (Steve Martin) is somewhat of a control freak. Trying to get home to Chicago to spend Thanksgiving with his wife and kids, his flight is rerouted to a distant city in Kansas because of a freak snowstorm, and his sanity begins to fray. Worse yet, he is forced to bunk up with talkative Del Griffith (John Candy), whom he finds extremely annoying. Together they must overcome the insanity of holiday travel to reach their intended destination. Rated R, 1hr, 33 min. (1987)

Shop Local this Christmas!

Typically, the focus of our weekly post is Winterset’s non-profit organizations and the activities that they provide for our community. For the next few weeks, I’ll also be giving some space to promote some of our local businesses as we all prepare for the holiday shopping season. Ours is a wonderful community, made even more so by small business owners who generously support community projects, and local non-profits, all year long. Now it’s our turn to give back!

One of the MANY things I enjoy about living in Winterset, is shopping here! I really do like shopping (most of the time!), but the idea of spending hours fighting ‘big city’ traffic and crowds at the malls sends me running for the hills. It’s really easy these days to trade in that mall shopping experience for the convenient alternative of online shopping. However, putting more dollars in the pockets of giant retail conglomerates doesn’t do anything to support friends and neighbors right here in our own community.

I know all of you care deeply about our community and its future! One super easy way to show that, is to do as much of your shopping as possible with local merchants. (Isn’t it great when shopping is a civic duty?!) Keep reading for more information about Shop Small Saturday (which is actually a week-long event this year) but here are some highlights of the bounteous treasures you can find when you shop right here in Winterset.

Coming Soon

Festival of Lights REVERSE Parade

Friday • 11/27 • 6:00 – 7:30pm
Winterset City Park Campground

Next Friday, the Madison County Chamber of Commerce is teaming up with Winterset Parks and Recreation to create a REVERSE parade in lieu of our typical parade around the square. Enjoy lighted displays, floats, and holiday fun in a DRIVE THROUGH format!

Shop Small Crawl

November 28th through December 5th

The Saturday following Thanksgiving is observed as Shop Small Saturday in communities across the country, Winterset included. This year, however, the downtown community is expanding from one day to a week-long Shop Small Crawl! Starting on Saturday, November 28th, many of the downtown businesses will have treats, steals and deals. As you shop you can enter to win a special grand prize drawing—a one-night stay for 2 at the new Winterset Wonderland Air B&B.

Congratulations

Optimist Student of the Month

As friends and supporters of the youth in Winterset, the Winterset Optimist Club formally recognizes Senior students in our community who exemplify outstanding character that aligns to the Optimist Creed. By recognizing these young citizens, it is their hope that they will continue to live the Optimist Creed and be examples for others to follow.

In November, Ava Lowden, a senior at Winterset High School was recognized as Student of the Month.

To learn more about the Winterset Optimist Club, their goals, and how you might join the organization, visit their webpage (which is actually hosted right here on The Winterset Citizen!)

CRISP Candy & Nuts

CRISP needs your help! They have a good supply of nuts & candy remaining after they filled the original orders for their fundraiser. Usually they sell the “extras” at the hospital, but this is not possible this year due to rising COVID numbers. Please call Amy Nolan at 515-462-7009 if you would be interested in making a purchase!
