Brighten Your World

Groth’s Gardens & Greenhouses is OPEN for Mum Season!

Located northeast of Winterset on Cumming Road, Groth’s Gardens and Greenhouses is now open again with their field-grown mums. The Groths grow early, mid-season and late mums which ensures fresh plants into mid October. Many customers purchase early mums in late August and return for the late-season by early October for mums that will last into November. It’s the last “flower fix” before winter and folks like to make the most of it!

Current hours are 10:00 am-5:00 pm Monday through Saturday and Noon-4:00 pm Sundays.

2020 Prices:
12” potted mum – $17.99 ea. or 3/$51.00
8” potted mum – $8.99 ea. or 3/$25.00

In addition their famous mums, you can also find beautiful fall color baskets like these to enhance (or replace) your spring annuals that might be looking a little tired these days (mine certainly are despite my gardener/husband’s best efforts!). Pumpkins, gourds and fall ornamentals will arrive by mid-September.

Covid-19 Notice from Groth’s

To protect the health and safety of our customers and employees we will be maintaining compliance with state guidelines for business.

  • Wagon handles will be wiped down and sanitized before and after usage.
  • If you are not feeling 100% healthy, please stay at home for your own well being and the health and safety of others.

This Weekend

The Goonies

Playing this weekend at the Iowa Theater
Friday & Saturday • 7:00pm

“The Goonies” is a smooth mixture of the usual ingredients from Steven Spielberg action movies, made special because of the high-energy performances of the kids who have the adventures. It’s a fantastical story of buried pirate treasure, told with a slice-of-life approach that lets these kids use words Bogart didn’t know in “Casablanca”. There used to be children’s movies and adult movies. Now Spielberg has found an in-between niche, for young teenagers who have fairly sophisticated tastes in horror. (A review by Roger Ebert in 1985) PG, 1hr 55min

MCLI Leader Graduate Program

The focus will be on three core leadership principals: conflict, teamwork, and communication.

This series is separate from the annual MCLI program. The idea is to expand on topics lightly touched in the basic leadership institute. This four-part series will enhance what graduates have already learned and encourages them to dive deeper into honing their leadership skills. Register online before August 28th.

All sessions will be from 8:00am – 12:00pm at Agrivision Equipment. Cost is $750/person, with discounted rates for multiple people from the same company. Please contact DeAnne Negley at deanne@groupdynamic.net for more information.

Walk Around the Clock

Winterset Town Square

Despite Covid 19 Restrictions, Wellness Wednesday in Winterset organizers have put together a program for every Wednesday in September.

This coming Wednesday, September 2nd, will feature “Walk Around the Clock” from Noon – 1:00PM on the Winterset square. Chris Nolte, Volunteer Coordinator for EveryStep Hospice and one of the organizers said, “Our friends, David Hargrove and Chris Baumgarn from the Winterset Public Library are providing our music for the first Wednesday walk and we’ll be Surfin’ USA, with music mostly from the early to mid 60s.” Of course, social distancing and masks are encouraged.

It looks like next Wednesday will be really lovely day for a mid-day walk, too, with temperatures in the low 80s instead of the high 90s like this week!

Now in its eighth year, the Winterset Wine Walk has become one of the most popular events in downtown Winterset which made it especially sad when May rolled around and it had to be postponed. A limited number of tickets will be sold for each hour (2:00 – 7:00) to enable people to stay more spaced out. Purchase your tickets online, or call the chamber to reserve yours now – 462-1185.

How to Cheer on the Huskies

Guidance for Fall Sports Spectators

WCSD released guidelines this week for spectators of fall 2020 athletic events. The focus is to find the safest way possible to allow parents and a few others to watch the games in person. All home football and volleyball games will also be live streamed on the Winterset Huskies YouTube channel. The link will be communicated via the Winterset Huskies Twitter account (@WintersetHusky), the Winterset Huskies Facebook Page (Winterset Huskies), and on the Winterset Huskies Activity Web Page (www.wintersetcsrschoolteams.com). This will enable viewing of the game for those that are unable to attend.

For the 2020 fall sports season the RRC and District Football will be limiting capacity to 50%. Winterset Schools has developed a protocol for ticket sales to accommodate this guideline for home football and volleyball games.

Winterset will use a ticket voucher system. All spectators must have a voucher prior to being admitted. This  includes those that have activity passes, booster club passes, or senior citizen passes. Ticket vouchers will enable the holder to either purchase a ticket at the gate or use their pass. The voucher will have no monetary value.  Admission price is $5 for adults and students at all HS JV/V events. JV only events are $4 for adults, $3 for students. JH events are $3 for adults, $2 for students.
