Great Citizens

Winterset Rotarians

Our local Rotarians recently organized a work crew for straightening the posts on the railing overlooking the Rotary Hedge Maze in city part. The team dug dozens of holes then evenly pulled the posts to plumb and mixed concrete to set around the posts bases.

Many thanks are owed to the Rotary Club (and other service organizations in Winterset) for the amazing work that they do in our community, often times without much recognition!

Back to School!

Saying that this school year is going to be unlike any other is a bit of an understatement! Anyone even remotely involved with ‘back to school’ is likely experiencing a broad range of emotions right now—from excitement and relief to full-on anxiety. As a family that that consists of a full-time WCSD educator (a former WCSD educator) and three school-aged children, we’re doing the best we can to prepare to face this new situation and experiencing all of those emotions and then some!

Regardless of how we all feel about it, though, school is starting on Monday and hundreds of Winterset citizens will be heading back to the hallowed halls. Some will be stepping foot in the building for the first time in over 160 days. Others have been working basically non-stop for the past five months as the world has changed at a fast and furious pace.

As the writer of Winterset Citizen, my goal is recognize and uplift the positive people and events that make our community special. So today, I lift up the hundreds of teachers, staff and administrators at WCSD who are amazing, talented, caring and nurturing and who are working like crazy to meet the challenge of this school year with creativity, innovation, and positivity. You are wonderful!

By the way, I had the opportunity to be in all three buildings this week and they look FANTASTIC! This is one of the new murals as Winterset Elementary. The High School is some equally awesome new artwork.

This Weekend

Blues Brothers

Playing this weekend at the Iowa Theater
Saturday • 7:00pm

After his release from prison, Jake (John Belushi) reunites with his brother, Elwood (Dan Aykroyd) — collectively known as the “Blues Brothers.” Jake’s first task is to save the orphanage the brothers grew up in from closing, by raising $5,000 to pay back taxes. The two are convinced they can earn the money by getting their old band back together. However, after playing several gigs and making a few enemies, including the police, the brothers face daunting odds to deliver the money on time.

MCLI Leader Graduate Program

Group Dynamic and the Madison County Leadership Institute have partnered to offer a four-part leadership graduate series this fall. This series is only for graduates of MCLI, or another leadership institute, as it goes above and beyond basic leadership skills. The focus will be on three core leadership principals: conflict, teamwork, and communication.

This series is separate from the annual MCLI program. The idea is to expand on topics lightly touched in the basic leadership institute. This four-part series will enhance what graduates have already learned and encourages them to dive deeper into honing their leadership skills. Register online before August 28th.

All sessions will be from 8:00am – 12:00pm at Agrivision Equipment. Cost is $750/person, with discounted rates for multiple people from the same company. Please contact DeAnne Negley at deanne@groupdynamic.net for more information.

Guidance for Fall Sports Spectators

WCSD released guidelines this week for spectators of fall 2020 athletic events. The focus is to find the safest way possible to allow parents and a few others to watch the games in person. All home football and volleyball games will also be live streamed on the Winterset Huskies YouTube channel. The link will be communicated via the Winterset Huskies Twitter account (@WintersetHusky), the Winterset Huskies Facebook Page (Winterset Huskies), and on the Winterset Huskies Activity Web Page (www.wintersetcsrschoolteams.com). This will enable viewing of the game for those that are unable to attend.

For the 2020 fall sports season the RRC and District Football will be limiting capacity to 50%. Winterset Schools has developed a protocol for ticket sales to accommodate this guideline for home football and volleyball games.

Winterset will use a ticket voucher system. All spectators must have a voucher prior to being admitted. This  includes those that have activity passes, booster club passes, or senior citizen passes. Ticket vouchers will enable the holder to either purchase a ticket at the gate or use their pass. The voucher will have no monetary value.  Admission price is $5 for adults and students at all HS JV/V events. JV only events are $4 for adults, $3 for students. JH events are $3 for adults, $2 for students.

Bazaar Third Thursday

The first edition of the Madison County Chamber of Commerce’s latest event, Bazaar Third Thursdays, was held a few days ago and was a great success and a lot of fun. This event will repeat each month so mark your calendars for September 17, October 15, November 19, and December 17!

Winterset Wine Walk – RESCHEDULED!

Saturday • September 12th • 2:00 – 7:00pm
Downtown Winterset

Now in its eighth year, the Winterset Wine Walk has become one of the most popular events in downtown Winterset which made it especially sad when May rolled around and it had to be postponed. During this event, participants can sample locally-made wine and enjoy shopping specials, prizes and more at participating businesses around Winterset’s town square. The ticket price also includes a commemorative wine glass.

Thankfully, the Madison County Chamber of Commerce has come up with a plan and rescheduled the event for September 12th. A limited number of tickets will be sold for each hour (2:00 – 7:00) to enable people to stay more spaced out. Online ticket information will be available soon, or you can call the chamber to reserve yours now – 462-1185.
