Star Search Challenge!

Carol Liechty and some of her friends on the Dream Big Dreams committee put together another fantastic Explore Madison County page in last week’s Madisonian. We hope you got a copy!  Thanks to the Kaldenberg, Parkin & Sawyer families, you can take your kids exploring and they can earn a free ice cream coupon from Frostees by taking pictures of what they find. Here’s what you need to know…

If you didn’t get a Madisonian last week, you can find copies of the July Explorer page in two of the Free Little Libraries in town. One is located at 4th Ave & West Jefferson, the other at 5th Street & East Court.

• Use the page from either the Madisonian or the Little Library and complete challenges found in the three stars

• Take a pic of the stars you discovered around town

• Text or call Deb Kaldenberg at 515-468-1757

• Arrange to pick up a Frostees ice cream prize at Deb’s front porch, 615 N. 1st Ave.

See if you can find all of the following on the Freedom Rock:

• A word on the Freedom Rock that means Courage

• The word Courage on a nearby bench

• George Stout

• Four prisoners of war

You can also find the word Courage in the Carver Park mural a block north of the Freedom Rock

George Stout is honored with a monument and plaque two blocks west of the Freedom Rock

After returning home, one of the POWs, Don Thomas, became a Winterset art teacher & helped start nearby:

• Winterset Art Center 60 years ago (one block west of the Freedom Rock)

• Carver Park 30 years ago

This Weekend

Friday at 5 Summer Concerts

Tonight • July 10 • 5:00pm

Tonight marks the return of the “Fridays at 5” Concert Series at City Park. The Madison County Chamber of Commerce iand Winterset Parks and Recreation Department have teamed up for this FREE community event for families and lovers of music, fresh air, summer, and fun!

Easton’s Food Truck will be on hand serving food, and beer. Beverage and popcorn sales will begin at 5:00 pm and the live music begins at 5:30. Tonight’s featured band is “Willie Mac & the Lost Cousins.”

Bring lawn chairs or blankets and yard games, but please no coolers or additional food or drinks. Also be sure to stay at least 6 feet away from other concert guests.

In partnership with the Iowa Theater, The Winterset Stage is presenting this 1963 musical comedy FREE for Winterset Stage Members! Tickets for non-Winterset Stage member will be regular price.

It goes without saying that this year has brought about many changes, and required an abundance of flexibility in the way we conduct business. This is especially true for arts and entertainment organizations, like The Winterset Stage, that have had to cancel large portions of their programming.

Even in the face of cancellations and postponements, the Winterset Stage is still committed to bringing quality programming to our community and is looking for unique ways to do that in the new environment we’re facing—like this sponsorship of Bye Bye Birdie. Admission to all showings of this film will be FREE for Winterset Stage members.

Membership this year is being offered as a two-year discounted membership instead of the typical annual membership. Of course none of us know what exactly the future holds, but The Winterset Stage is proceeding with hopeful optimism that they can still produce some kind of live performance later this year and a full season in 2021. In the meantime, they’re going to keep working on providing some different experiences that can feed our theatrical appetites.

Membership support from the community has always been a key financial component to the organization allowing them to produce quality shows and education opportunities. Now more than ever, they need our support to stay active through this challenging time.

New Exhibit at the Iowa Quilt Museum

Out of Control: Quilts that Break the Rules

The Iowa Quilt Museum opened a new exhibit on Tuesday and is it’s like nothing you’ve ever seen before! The title of the exhibit is “Out of Control: Quilts that Break the Rules” and the display was curated by Barbara Brackman and Deb Rowden of Kansas. These two quilters and quilt historians have a special affinity for the ‘odd’ and the patterns, color choices, designs, and even the workmanship of these quilts will leave visitors wondering, “what was she thinking?” You really have to see them in person to marvel at their artistry.
