The Winterset Stage “Introduction to the Stage” class

Saturday • 9/7 • 10:00am – Noon
to be held at The Iowa Theater

Led by Teddi Yaeger and Meredith McKay, the completely relaxed and non-threatening two-hour “Intro to the Stage” workshop will cover:

  • Stage Lingo & Vocabulary
  • How to get the most from a script
  • Basics of blocking and stage movement
  • Auditioning Basics

There is no cost for this workshop and it’s open to all regardless of your experience! If you’ve ever wanted to get involved with community theater, this is a great chance to dip your toe! If you’d like to audition for Charlotte’s Web (Auditions on September 15 & 16), this would be a great way to get yourself in the groove.

NOW Playing at the Iowa Theater

Dora and the Lost City of Gold

Having spent most of her life exploring the jungle, nothing could prepare Dora for her most dangerous adventure yet — high school. Accompanied by a ragtag group of teens and Boots the monkey, Dora embarks on a quest to save her parents while trying to solve the seemingly impossible mystery behind a lost Incan civilization. PG / 1 hr, 42 min

Winterset City Park Bocce Fields

Register your two person team for this round-robin Bocce Tournament by 4:00 on Saturday, September 7th. The fee is $50 per team and all proceeds will go to local non-profit organizations. There will be trophies for the winners and dinner served by the Madison County Cattlemen at 5:00pm. Fill the Valley at the White Silo

Saturday • 9/7 • 4:00 – 9:00pm
The White Silo (located near Covered Bridges Winery) 2212 170th Trail, Winterset

The live music scene in Winterset continues to get better all the time! Check out this outdoor music festival on Saturday evening at a new venue, the White Silo, located north of Winterset on the west side of the road before you reach Covered Bridges Winery. Grab your own chairs/seating for this open air concert. Tickets can be purchased ahead of time online for $20 or at the gate for $25. All ages are welcome at this event to enjoy the following bands:

The New Mexicos
Sometimes you just want to sing other peoples’ songs. The New Mexicos have arrived to serve up a heaping stack of cover songs with a strong country tilt

Porter Union
Their honest approach to songwriting combines raw emotional themes with a traditional country sound to bring the listener into the story. It’s no surprise they’ve shared a stage with a variety of notable artists including many of their own heroes. Porter Union was recently selected by Travis Tritt as a contestant on REAL COUNTRY on USA Network.

The Nadas
What is important is that they make music that makes you feel things. Happy, sad, nostalgic, optimistic, energized, curious, inspired, and confused. The important part is that it makes you want to listen, and sometimes dance. 2018 will mark the 25th year of The Nadas. In January, they just released their 11th studio record entitled “One Louder”. At a stage where most bands would be resting on their laurels and letting others do the heavy lifting, The Nadas are out there swinging for the fences, driving the van and carrying their own instruments. Last fall, The Nadas were honored with an induction into the Iowa Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.

Open Auditions for Charlotte’s Web

Monday • 9/16 • 6:00 pm
The Winterset Stage at the Iowa Theater

There are roles available for both adults and children in this show and everyone is welcome at auditions next weekend. Scripts will be provided and auditions consist of reading/performing lines from certain scenes so you won’t even need to prepare anything ahead of time. There are two opportunities to attend auditions, but you only need to attend one, not both.

Performance dates for Charlotte’s Web are November 14-17. Rehearsals will begin on September 29th and be held on Sunday, Monday & Tuesday evenings with some Thursday evenings and Saturday morning possible.

Evening Under the Stars

Saturday • 9/21 • 5:00pm
Madison County Foundation for Environmental Education
Event at Covered Bridges Winery

It’s time to purchase your tickets for the Evening Under the Stars fundraiser to benefit the Madison County Foundation for Environmental Education (MCFEE). The event will be a special celebration of the progress that has been made towards the new Madison County Conservation Center. The night will begin with social hour at 5:00 p.m. plus appetizers and a chance to check out the silent auction items. Covered Bridges Winery will be serving their local wines inside the winery during the event and a homemade dinner will be served at 6:00 p.m. The live auction will begin at 7:30 p.m.

Over the last year and a half, fundraising has been one of the main priorities of the conservation center project. Thanks to several generous donations and private grants, around 73% of the project has now been funded. With your help, the Madison County Conservation Board and their Foundation (MCFEE) aim to reach the fundraising goal by the end of this year. Event tickets are $35/person or $280 per table (seats 8). To purchase your tickets, contact Michelle Leonard at 515-494-3560 or e-mail mcfeeboard@gmail.com. Tickets are also available to purchase in person at the Madison County Conservation Board office located at 2273 Clark Tower Road or from any MCFEE member. All proceeds from the event will go towards the new conservation center.

REMEMBER…

Take the Heart & Soul Survey SOON

Available through September

Madison County Heart & Soul is an initiative that recognizes that our county is diverse and made up of individual communities, rural areas, and neighborhoods. Heart & Soul’s purpose is to honor community pride as we develop a county-wide future that represents what matters most to the residents. The Heart & Soul organizers feel that the best way to identify Madison County’s distinctive character—and find the means to protect it—is to listen to people who live in the communities of the county.

You can help define the Heart & Soul of your community and Madison County by completing short, anonymous survey, but you need to do it soon!

This is the “Last call” to Winterset residents to complete this survey. After the end of September, the survey will close and the results will be collected and processed. Don’t miss your chance to share your thoughts in this important process. You can find everything you want to know about the process, and the survey, at the Madison County Heart & Soul website.
