This Weekend

Marvin’s Room

Thursday – Saturday • May 9-11 • 7:00pm
Sunday • May 12 • 2:00pm
The Winterset Stage @ The Iowa Theater

Beloved for its mordant humor and unflinching wisdom, Scott McPherson’s dark comedy allows us a moving view of one woman’s commitment to family and response to despair. This most recent show from the Winterset Stage is a bit different from the plays you’ve seen them produce in the past few years, but the various themes of family, personal struggle and loss are ones to which we can all relate. Tickets are available online through The Winterset Stage and will also be available at the door for each performance (if there are seats remaining).

Improv Night featuring Chowdown

Friday • 5/10 • 6:30 – 8:30pm
Bricker Price Block in Earlham

We’d love to tell you what you expect at Bricker-Price Block’s Improv Night, but we can’t. In fact, even the folks with CHOWDOWN, a live monthly improv comedy show at the Des Moines Social Club, can’t really tell you what will happen once their group hits the hardwood in the Hadley Family Social Club on Friday. The show will entirely be made up and unique to the thoughts and wit of Clifton Dewayne Antoine, Caitlin Dorsett, Jill Leary, Onnalee Kelley, Tim Overton, and Paul Privitera. “Improv is a form of comedic live theater where the actors make up scenes, characters, and plots in the moment in front of an audience. Since everything is new and has never been performed previously, improv is based on connection. It is vital to have a strong connection between with the improvisers on stage, as well as a connection with the audience.” says Onnalee Kelley. To get tickets to CHOWDOWN’s performance on May 10th visit the Bricker Price Block’s Website.

RAGBRAI Town Hall Meeting

Tuesday • 5/14 • 6:30pm
New Bridge Church (1305 W Jefferson)

The Winterset RAGBRAI committee will be hosting a town hall meeting on Tuesday, May 14 at 6:30 p.m. at New Bridge Church in Winterset. Everyone is invited to this informative meeting, which will cover the current planning process; expected road closures; the impact the event may have on residents, their businesses, and the town; as well as answer any questions you may have. Attendees will also have the opportunity to volunteer to host riders, sign-up to help during RAGBRAI, and purchase Winterset RAGBRAI t-shirts.

Finally

If you haven’t heard yet…Here Come the Mummies (HCTM), an eight-piece funk-rock band of 5000-year-old Egyptian Mummies with a one-track mind, will headline the
entertainment stage at 9 p.m. on Monday, July 22 during RAGBRAI’s overnight visit in Winterset, IA. Their “Terrifying Funk from Beyond the Grave” is sure to get you into them (and possibly vice versa).

Some say they were cursed after deflowering a great Pharaoh’s daughter. Others claim they are reincarnated Grammy-winning studio musicians. Regardless, Here Come the Mummies’ mysterious personas, cunning song-craft, and unrelenting live show will bend your brain, and melt your face. Their high energy show is bound to get the crowd up and dancing even after riding 70 miles by bike.

Here Come the Mummies is not only known locally but around the world. Since their discovery, HCTM has been direct support for P-Funk, Al Green, Mavis Staples, KC and the Sunshine Band, and Cheap Trick; rocked the Super Bowl Village; become a regular on The Bob and Tom Show; played massive festivals like Summer Camp, Common Ground, Voodoo Fest, Musikfest, Suwannee Hulaween, and Riverbend; and sold tickets by the thousands across large swaths of North America.

Winterset RAGBRAI t-shirts are now available for purchase. You may order yours online or purchase one at Village Bootery, Country Cutters or the Madison County Chamber of Commerce. The shirts are heather gray with the Winterset RAGBRAI logo and available for $20 in youth medium through 4XL. Many local businesses are offering discounts each Monday from May 20 to July 22 to those wearing their RAGBRAI shirt. In addition, t-shirt contests and activities are being planned to help create excitement in the community for this upcoming event.
