Weekend in Winterset, April 25-28, 2019

Attention Artistic Kids…

With the Des Moines Registers’ Annual Great Bike Ride Across Iowa (RAGBRAI) coming through Winterset this year, the town has a lot to celebrate. To help each overnight town get excited for the arrival of nearly 30,000 riders, support people, media and more, RAGBRAI hosts a statewide art contest for kids (kindergarten through 5th ) in the overnight towns. One local winner will be chosen and entered into the statewide contest. A statewide winner will then be chosen and the young artist will win $350. The other entries will be displayed around town to welcome riders to Winterset on Monday, July 22.

The entry should incorporate Winterset’s theme: “Winterset: Where Everyone’s a Winner”. This theme is all about celebrating the numerous accomplishments and awards this community has received, as well as applauding the riders coming to town for RAGBRAI. Your artwork should incorporate what this looks like to you! The artwork can be a drawing, painting or sculpture but
should be no larger than 11” x 14”. Please be sure to include your child’s name, age, grade, address and phone number on the back of the entry.

The deadline to submit entries is Saturday, May 18 and may be turned into the Madison County Chamber office, Winterset Public Library or the Winterset Elementary or Middle Schools. If you have any questions, please email Winterset RAGBRAI at wintersetragbrai@gmail.com.

Coming up at the Iowa Theater

BREAKTHROUGH is based on the inspirational true story of one mother’s unfaltering love in the face of impossible odds. When Joyce Smith’s adopted son John falls through an icy Missouri lake, all hope seems lost. But as John lies lifeless, Joyce refuses to give up. Her steadfast belief inspires those around her to continue to pray for John’s recovery, even in the face of every case history and scientific prediction. From producer DeVon Franklin (Miracles from Heaven) and adapted for the screen by Grant Nieporte (Seven Pounds) from Joyce Smith’s own book, BREAKTHROUGH is an enthralling reminder that faith and love can create a mountain of hope, and sometimes even a miracle.

Agricultural Day on the Hill

Saturday • 4/27 • 1:00 – 3:00 pm
Madison County Historical Society

The Madison County Historical Society invites you to celebrate the life and legacy of John Stowell with “Agricultural Day on the Hill.” Stowell was a long-time member of the Board of Directors until his death in 2016. “Johnny,” as he was known, worked with his family at the Madison County Auction and the Stowell Auction Service.  He was also a farmer, but his true mission in life was to help others whenever he could.

This FREE event will take place on Saturday, April 27 from 1:00 pm to 3:00 pm.  The Historical Complex’s outbuildings will be open, with events centering around the big red barn.  Look over the equipment exhibits that tell the tale of Madison County agriculture and compare early tractors to a current model that will be on display from Agri-Vision.  Henry Wallace (1836-1916), re-enacted by Winterset’s own Bob Kaldenberg, will tell you about farming and agriculture during his lifetime. For the kids, we will have a corn box where they can scoop and pour all they like.

The Board of Directors of the Madison County Historical Society want to recognize Johnny’s steadfast commitment while he was a board member and his big-hearted bequest to the Society.  We dedicate this Agricultural Day on the Hill in his memory.

Members of the Madison County Historical Society are invited to the Society’s annual meeting that same day, beginning at 11:00 with lunch to follow.  The meeting will discuss projects, review finances, and elect Directors. If you are not a member, you may join at the door.
