Mama Mia! Here We Go Again is a joyful visit back to the beautiful Greek island of Kalokairi.  The movie is a prequel/sequel hybrid of a movie and in the prequel scenes, Lily James plays a young Donna, graduating from Oxford before heading off on an endless holiday wherein she will try on a pair of dungarees and a trio of handsome suitors. Meanwhile, in the present (10 years after the first movie), Amanda Seyfried’s Sophie is striving to fulfill her mother’s vision with the newly renovated Hotel Bella Donna, while wrestling with the prospect of history repeating itself on this idyllic island. While the first film was more about Donna’s (Meryl Streep) relationships with the three potential fathers of her daughter, the second film is more about the connection between the mother, daughter and grandmother.  The past and present are threaded together with both top 10 ABBA hits (some a repeat of the first movie) and lesser known B sides.

Some might call it predictable, but how can you not love the wonderful exuberance of “Dancing Queen”.  Mama Mia! Here We Go Again plays through this weekend at The Iowa theater.
