Weekend in Winterset, August 2nd – 5th, 2018

The Winterset Citizen abroad!

When one returns the other wanders, watch for photos next week and see if you can guess where the citizen has gone.

This Weekend

Join the Winterset Cidery tonight at 7:00 pm for Trivia Night. Get there a little early to grab your score cards and first glass of cider!

The Cidery is also hosting their Annual Madison County Sheriff’s K-9 Fundraiser on Saturday, August 4th. Enjoy locally made hard cider, food by Up in Smoke! and the music of iNFUZiON, a Des Moines power trio comprised of Kevin McGinnis, Greg Cloe and Mark Owen. iNFUZiON plays a wide variety of songs – everything from Tom Petty, to Van Morrison, Kenny Rogers, Eric Clapton, The Rolling Stones, Waylon & Willie, CCR, The Kinks, The Meters, The Grateful Dead, and the list goes on and on. Up in Smoke will begin serving at 5:30 and there is $5 cover charge. A percentage of proceeds on Saturday will go to the Madison County Sheriff’s K-9 program.

The Madison County Chamber of Commerce and the Winterset Parks & Recreation Department present the final First Friday Concert Series event at City Park, sponsored by Fareway Food Stores on Friday, August 3rd. The featured band is Work Day Cure, sponsored by Bridges Financial Associates, Inc. Hot food will be available for sale, as well as popcorn, beer, soft drinks and bottled water beginning at 6:00 pm. The music begins at 7:00 pm. Bring the whole family for this outdoor event, and don’t forget lawn chairs and blankets!

This weekend is the Iowa’s tax-free holiday so it’s a great time to shop for school supplies and back-to-school clothes for those kids who seem to have grown 8 inches in the past 8 weeks! It’s also a great time to support some of our sponsors and let them know how much you appreciate them for helping to provide The Winterset Citizen!

  • Village Bootery has shoes for the whole family (even if your kids haven’t had shoes on for the whole summer!) and summer clearance specials.
  • Ben Franklin has EVERYTHING you need to fill those back packs. Plus, they have school supply lists at the store so you don’t even have to hunt for the May issue of The Beacon AND, you can find a coupon in the back of this week’s Shopper good for 20% off all school supplies.
  • Montross Pharmacy has the obvious pharmacy supplies (like some Aspirin for those late-August headaches when everyone has just about had enough of each other) and is also a great place to find gifts for teachers!
  • And if after all that, you find that you’re in need of a little something for yourself, we suggest a trip to Angel Wings & CT or Pine Creek, LTD for a little retail therapy. Finding yourself something dazzling to wear or a snazzy new piece for your home is sure to be a pick-me-up after the exhaustion of back-to-school shopping!

Check out Hinterland Music Festival this weekend at the Avenue of the Saints Amphitheater in St. Charles.  The festival is two days of music curated for all who love both music and the outdoors. The annual festival features music, camping, art, crafts, family engagement and more. Their Facebook page has the line up, lots of information and helpful hints.

It’s been three years since theme park and luxury resort Jurassic World was destroyed by dinosaurs out of containment. Isla Nublar now sits abandoned by humans while the surviving dinosaurs fend for themselves in the jungles. When the island’s dormant volcano begins roaring to life, Owen (Chris Pratt) and Claire (Bryce Dallas Howard) mount a campaign to rescue the remaining dinosaurs from this extinction-level event. Owen is driven to find Blue, his lead raptor who’s still missing in the wild, and Claire has grown a respect for these creatures she now makes her mission. Arriving on the unstable island as lava begins raining down, their expedition uncovers a conspiracy that could return our entire planet to a perilous order not seen since prehistoric times.

Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom kicks off with an intense and memorable opening sequence and wastes no time at all before taking us back to Isla Nublar. There, a combination of an exploding volcano and rampaging dinosaurs results in an edge of your seat action spectacle which will keep you glued to the screen from start to finish and it’s at The Iowa this weekend!

And don’t forget to go and see the Cliffs of Insanity as they appeared in the 1987 classic film The Princess Bride on Way Back Wednesday next week. Young and old will enjoy this fairytale adventure.

The Winterset Rotary Club will host the 19th Annual Cannonball Pump and Run on Saturday, August 4th, at Monumental Park (Cannonball Park), 201 E. Court Ave. Check in is from 6:30 to 7:00 am, lifting starts at 7:00 am and the 5K starts at 8:30 am. Proceeds go to Winterset Rotary Scholarship fund and WHS Activity Fund. If you’ve got produce envy (everyone around you is getting ripe, juicy produce from their gardens but you have a black thumb), the Winterset Farmers Market is here to help. They’re still open every Saturday morning from 8:00 am to Noon with produce, baked goods, hand-made crafts and more (like coffee roasted right here in Madison County).

Madison County River Alliance will be hosting an overnight canoe trip on the Middle River Saturday, August 4th, through Sunday, August 5th. The group will be paddling from Schildberg Access to Roseman bridge (~7 miles). You can find more details on the Madison County Conservation Facebook page.

Celebrate the launch of the newest exhibit at the Iowa Quilt Museum, Blue Ribbon Quilts of the Iowa State Fair at an Exhibit Opening Reception on Saturday, August 4th, from 6:00 to 8:00 pm. There is no admission charge and fair-themed refreshments will be served! This new exhibit features over two dozen former blue ribbon winners from previous years at the Iowa State Fair. There are three quilts in the exhibit by Madison County quilters! The exhibit will be on display through October 14th.

Here is a sampling of some of the thirty fabulous quilts on display in this exhibit!

There is no charge for the movie and there will be free popcorn!

Coming Soon

Hey comic book fans! The Winterset Library is hosting a History of Comic Books event on Tuesday, August 7th, from 6:30 to 7:30 pm. Researcher Terry Fisk will talk about the artists and writers who created such well-known superheroes as Superman, Batman, Wonder Woman, Iron Man, Spider-Man, Captain America, etc., and reveal the influences and inspiration for these powerful characters. He will examine the history of comic books, and the impact they’ve had on our culture. Beginning at age 13, Fisk drew a weekly comic strip for his local newspaper and later studied to be a comic book artist at the Minneapolis College of Art and Design (the alma mater of Superman artist, Dan Jurgens). As a comic book aficionado, he owns a huge collection of comics, has met many of the artists and writers, and possesses an encyclopedic knowledge of the subject. Registration is required for this event. Please call the library at 515-462-1731 or register online.

On Wednesday, August 8th, Farmers & Merchants State Bank is hosting an Antique Appraisal Event. Bring one item to be appraised by Garrison Auction service at 9:00 am in the Winterset Main Bank Community Room. Reservations are requested, all 515-462-4242, and coffee & donuts will be served.

Thursday, August 9th on the square at 6:15pm will be the Winterset High School Marching Band Ice Cream Social. Join the Marching Huskies for their first performance of the season! The marching band will be working hard all week at their band camp preparing this years half time show. They would love to show off their hard work by giving you a small preview of the first halftime performance.

The August 15th deadline to sign up for the Master Gardener class with Madison County Extension office is coming up soon. Please call RoxAnn Rhoads at 515-462-2510 or visit their website if you have any questions.

Finally

We’ve been admiring the Facebook feed from the Winterset Police Department today! They just wrapped up their Junior Police Academy and it looks there were some fun times had (not just by the kids!) and some great relationships formed. Way to go, WPD. You make us proud to be Winterset Citizens!
