Weekend in Winterset, August 23rd – 26th, 2018

The sidewalks were crawling this morning with young Winterset Citizens headed to school for their first day this year.

So much excitement!

This Weekend

The Madison County Fair board will be hosting a Rodeo this Friday, August 24th, at 7:30 pm. All of your favorite events will be included like saddle bronc riding, bareback bronc riding, barrel racing, steer wrestling, team roping, calf roping, breakaway roping, and bull riding, along with concession stand, beer, 50/50 raffle and chicken scramble. Buy your tickets at the event. Adult tickets are $10, ages 5-12 are $5  and under 5 are free.

 


The State Fair may be over, but you can still see some Blue Ribbon Quilts at the Iowa Quilt Museum.  The current exhibit showing now through October 14th features over 30 quilts from across the state that were all blue ribbon winners at the Iowa State Fair. The IQM will host several events in the month of September:

• Friday, September 14th, 7:00 pm – Trunk Show with Linzee McCray

• Thursday, September 20th, 5:30 pm – Restorative Yoga

• Tuesday, September 25th, 6:30 pm – Screening of Pieced Together, a documentary about the Barn Quilt Trail in Adams County, OH (held at The Iowa)

• Saturday, September 29th, 2:00 pm – Iowa State Fair Panel Discussion with Jerry Parkin & Dorothy Faidley


This week at the Madison County Farmers Market have your child enter the “Back to School” drawing while you shop for tomatoes, peppers, onions, cucumbers & other summer produce from 8:00 am to Noon on Saturday.  From 9:00 to 11:00 am (weather permitting) Farmers & Merchants State Bank will have free popcorn available.


Author and appraiser, Mark Moran, will be at the Winterset Public Library on Friday, August 24th, from 5:00 to 8:00 pm evaluating personal items, as well as offering an educated appraisal and history of the objects. Mark is the author of over 25 antiques & collectibles books, and has appeared on PBS Antiques Roadshow.


The Winterset Kiwanis will host their Summer Pancake Breakfast on Saturday, August 25th, from 7:00 to 11:00 am at the American Legion Hall. Cost is $6 and proceeds benefit children in Madison County. Come hungry!

 


The inimitable Tony Valdez and the Rockets will be at Covered Bridges Winery on Saturday, August 26th.  Enjoy ‘knock-your-socks-off’ jazz, soul and blues. Music is from 7:00 to 10:00 pm and there is a $5 cover. Sabores de Mexico will be serving food from 6:30 to 8:30. Music will be held outside so take a lawn chair as seating is limited.

 

 

 

 


Rikki Kissell from Small Town Styles is coming back to the Winterset Public Library and she will be presenting a series of hair classes to help you learn the art of hair. Monday, August 27 at 6:00 pm the topic is Styling with a Flat Iron. Have you ever wanted to do more with your flat iron than just straighten your hair? This is the class for you. Rikki will be showing you how to curl your hair along with other fun tricks you can do with your flat iron. Please bring your own flat iron. Registration is required, either online or by calling the library at 515-462-1731.


Audrey (Mila Kunis) and Morgan (Kate McKinnon), two thirty-year-old best friends in Los Angeles, are thrust unexpectedly into an international conspiracy when Audrey’s ex-boyfriend shows up at their apartment with a team of deadly assassins on his trail. Surprising even themselves, the duo jump into action, on the run throughout Europe from assassins and a suspicious-but-charming British agent, as they hatch a plan to save the world.  “The Spy Who Dumped Me” is showing at The Iowa through Sunday, August 26th.

 

The Iowa will host two live music events in the month of September. On Friday, September 7th, Danika & The Jeb, and on Saturday, September 15th, Connemara Lads. We’ll remind you as the dates get closer but mark your calendars now because these both look like really great musical events.

Zen Rock Painting comes back to the Winterset Library on Thursday, August 30th, at 6:30 pm.   A quiet room, soothing music, simple painting with dots on smooth rocks….you need a night like this one!  Registration is required; call 515-462-1731 or register online. According to the online sign-up, there are only three spots left so hop to it if you’re planning to register.

 


Back to Dance Night at Winterset Ballet & Dance Studio will be held Thursday August 30th, beginning at 5:00 pm.  Drop by to meet the staff, try out a new class, pick up discounted in-stock dancewear items, $5 t-shirts, door prizes and more! Free classes begin at 5:30 pm with a Jazz class for kids and conclude with a 6:00 pm Adult fitness class.  You do not need to be currently enrolled.

Looking for something for your 2 or 3 year old? How about Twinkle Babies with Winterset Ballet and Dance’s Twinkle Star Dance program! These pre-tap and pre-ballet classes are designed to keep little ones engaged while being introduced to dance and movement. Join Winterset Ballet & Dance for Sparkle Day, Friday, August 31st, at 10:00 am and try a free class! Two year old class will be held from 10:00 to 10:30am and three year old class will be 10:30 to 11:00 am. Already enrolled? You can still come and join in the fun! More classes will be held at the 1st Avenue Collective on Saturday, September 1st.  At 10:30 am students in the A Penny for your Thoughts Necklace class will design a Penny Necklace using stamping and hammering techniques and melting sterling silver solder to frame a penny. Cost is $28.

At 1:30pm a Basic Metal Stamping class will begin. Students will design a monogram sterling silver bracelet using stamping and hammering techniques. It is a quick and easy process and you can make up to two initials or design charms along with a Swarovski Crystal. Cost is $48.

The Farmers & Merchants State Bank Customer Appreciation Luncheon will be held on Friday, September 7th, from 11:00 am to 1:00 pm at the Winterset Main Bank on the square. Enjoy an outdoor picnic lunch on tables provided by the American Legion Hall.


The Winterset Cidery is teaming up with HCI hospice care services for this Sea of Compassion Fundraiser on Thursday, September 13th. Proceeds from the event will support special, end-of-life experiences and quality-of-life needs for hospice patients in our community. Special Recognition

Hal Jackson (left) receives an appreciation plaque for more than 30 years of volunteer service promoting economic development in Madison County. Hal concluded his tenure with MCDG this month. Tom Leners Madison County Development Group Executive Director presented the plaque after the conclusion of the August MCDG Board meeting.

Hal joined the predecessor organization of MCDG (Winterset Incentive Network) in 1986. If you see Hal around Winterset thank him for his volunteer service to our community!
