Weekend in Winterset, July 26th – July 29th, 2018

The Winterset Citizen abroad!

This past week’s travels led our intrepid Winterset Citizen to the “Quiet Man Bridge” in Oughterard, Ireland. (Cue It’s a small world after all…)

This Weekend

Wonder if there’s a pot-o-gold under this rainbow!? Our friends at the Winterset Cidery posted this amazing photo online a few days ago and they would also like you to know that their hours are changing beginning Thursday, July 26th:

Thursdays: 4:00-9:00
Friday & Saturday: 1:00-10:00
Sunday: 1:00-6:00
Monday-Wednesday: Closed

Who doesn’t love a bargain? Downtown merchants will bust out the big savings this weekend on Friday, July 27th, and Saturday, July 28th, during the annual Krazy Dayz Sidewalk Sales. A few of the participating merchants are actually located just off of the square so don’t forget them when you’re making your rounds!

On Saturday, July 28th, from 10:00 am to 3:00 pm you can support the Covered Bridge Festival’s Passport to the Past activities and check out some nifty automobiles at the same time.”Fun in the Sun – Anything With Wheels” will be held at the Madison County Historical Complex located on South 2nd Avenue. If you have some cool wheels, take them out for a spin, or just go and have a look-see.

For over thirty years, Fred Rogers, an unassuming minister, puppeteer, writer and producer was beamed daily into homes across America. In his beloved television program, Mister Rogers’ Neighborhood, Fred and his cast of puppets and friends spoke directly to young children about some of life’s weightiest issues, in a simple, direct fashion. There hadn’t been anything like Mr. Rogers on television before and there hasn’t been since.

Though he may be best known today as a soft-spoken, cardigan-wearing children’s television host, in reality, Fred Rogers’ career represents a sustained attempt to present a coherent, beneficent view about how we should best speak to children about the important matters and how television could be used as a positive force in our society.

In Won’t You Be My Neighbor? (PG-13), Academy Award-winning filmmaker Morgan Neville (20 Feet From Stardom) looks back on the legacy of Fred Rogers, focusing on his radically kind ideas. While the nation changed around him, Fred Rogers stood firm in his beliefs about the importance of protecting childhood. Neville pays tribute to this legacy with the latest in a series of highly engaging, moving documentary portraits of essential American artists. Catch it this weekend at The Iowa Theater.

The incomparable Chad Elliott is coming back to Covered Bridges Winery and he is bringing The Redemptions with him. Enjoy some awesome Americana, rock, soul and blues this Saturday, July 28th, from 7:00 to 10:00 pm. Food will be available from 6:30 – 8:30 pm and the music will be outside so take a chair as seating is limited. There is a $5 cover.

This weekend offers up the last few days to catch the current exhibit at the Iowa Quilt Museum, Playing with Purpose: A Victoria Findlay Wolfe Retrospective. The exhibit closes Sunday, the museum will be closed on Monday and a new exhibit, Blue Ribbon Quilts of the Iowa State Fair, will open on Tuesday, July 31st. This new exhibit will feature over two dozen former blue ribbon winners from previous years at the Iowa State Fair. Some that were even made by Madison County quilters.

This quilt, made by Winterset citizen Cindy Bortell, will be on display during the Blue Ribbon Quilts of the Iowa State Fair exhibit at the Iowa Quilt Museum.
