Weekend in Winterset, June 7th – June 10th, 2018

The big deal in town this weekend is Women’s Weekend in Winterset—organized by the Madison County Chamber of Commerce and local merchants as a special weekend of classes, workshops, demos, entertainment, pampering, dining, and shopping. You can find all of the offerings listed HERE and we’ll tell you about a few more later on in this post so keep reading!

This Weekend

Head to the East lawn of the courthouse tonight, June 7th, for the first Lawn Chair Night with the Winterset Community Band. The concert starts at 7:00 pm and the VFW Auxiliary will be serving beef burgers, chips, ice cream and desserts. Jo Ellen Giles will entertain the crowd with her accordion about half way through the concert while the band takes a break. Bring a lawn chair or blanket and relax to some home-grown music.

The Winterset Cidery is kicking off the weekend with Trivia Night tonight, June 7th, at 7:00 pm. Play to win a free round for your team, Winterset Cidery merchandise and bragging rights all season! Teams should be between 1 and 6 players. No need to pre-register. The format: Rounds 1 through 3 consist of 10 questions each. Each question is worth 1 point, and there are no penalties for wrong answers. After each round, players turn in their answer cards to the MC, and there is a 10 minute break for scoring and cider refills! New answer sheets are handed out before the start of each round. At the end of all three rounds, the team with the most points wins. In the event of a tie, a verbal lightning round will ensue! Make a team and go get your cider on tonight.

If you’re the parent or caregiver of a child age 3-6 and are looking for some fun outings this summer, you’ll definitely want to sign up to attend these Musical Playdates. Held at Winterset Ballet and Dance Studio and led by Megan Barrett, these 30 minute playdates are an opportunity for musical exploration and play for young children.

Winterset Ballet & Dance Studio is also presenting their year-end recital this weekend. They are presenting the ballet Brave and Descendents is the title of the jazz/tap/hip-hop/modern portion of the recital. Shows are Friday, June 8th, at 6:00 pm, and Saturday, June 9th, at 3:00 pm. Reserved seating tickets can be purchased online ahead of time. They will also be available at the door and are $7 each. On Saturday, June 9th at 10:00 am, they will also present their Twinkle Babies and Daddy Daughter Dance performances. The Daddy Daughter Dance includes dancers ages 3-15 along with their dads—there are over 30 pairs. This show (which will be so precious!) is free and open to the public. Both sets of recitals will be held in Henry C. Miller Auditorium at Winterset High School.

If you know of a young dancer who would like to try out some new styles this summer, see what it’s like to be in a dance class or just have a little fun, check out the summer opportunities at Winterset Ballet and Dance. There are camps for all ages and styles of dance.

If your gardens (like ours!) are still feeling a bit lackluster this spring, head out to Groths’ Gardens & Greenhouses this weekend before they close for summer break on June 10th. They’ve got some great deals including 50% off perennials. Groth’s will re-open August 20th for the fall season with their famous mums.

The remaining bedding plants at Ben Franklin are also highly discounted now, but still looking really strong and healthy. Grab a few for an extra pop of color in your flower beds this summer.

Re:Home is open this Thursday through Sunday, June 7th through 10th.  Hours are Thursday 11:00 – 7:00, Friday 10:00 – 6:00, Saturday 9:00 – 5:00 and Sunday 12:00 – 4:00.

Also on Friday, June 8th, from 6:00 – 8:00 pm, you can explore the plant science of indigo at the Winterset Art Center with fiber artist, Maggie Howe, in her Indigo Dyeing Class. Indigo is a plant dye used to create beautiful shades of blue. Learn the history of indigo and the science of vat dyes followed by a demonstration. Create your own custom indigo-dyed silk scarf and cotton handkerchief (provided). Participants are invited to bring an additional item to dye (article of clothing, fiber, or fabric), a beverage of choice, and a snack for an evening of fun. The class fee is $35 for Winterset Art Center members and $40 for non-members.

This event is technically part of Women’s Weekend in Winterset but we’re pretty sure that men would be welcome as well.
