Weekend in Winterset, June 14th – June 17th, 2018

This Weekend

The Winterset Community Band continues with the second installation of their summer Lawn Chair Night concert series tonight, Thursday, June 14th. Food will be served by the Madison County Republicans beginning at 6:30 pm, and the concert starts at 7:00 pm. Singers from the Winterset High School choir will perform during the concert intermission.

Head over to Macksburg on Friday, June 15th, from 6:00 to 8:30 pm to grab a bite to eat and practice your Skillet Throw (you must sign up online). Hot dogs ($1) and hamburgers ($2) will be sold in the park during this practice session. Then on Saturday, June 16th, bring your own lawn chair for the festivities that begin at 10:00 am with a parade and pedal tractor pull. The main event, the National Skillet Throw Annual Championship, kicks off at 11:55 am. Stick around for the RC Car Demo at 4:30 pm and Street Dance which begins at 5:30 pm. Visit the National Skillet Throw website for a full list of events and registration information.

Don’t forget that the Madison County Farmer’s Market is set up on the courthouse square every Saturday morning from 8:00 to Noon rain or shine. You can find fresh produce, baked goods, and a whole host of handmade items for your enjoyment.

Celebrate the “Crystal” (15 year) Anniversary of Angel Wings & CT this Friday 10:00 am to 5:30 pm and Saturday 10:00 am to 5:00 pm.  Drop by the shop to check out the special deals including 15% off all regular priced clothing, up to 30% off sale clothing, and $5 gift cards for the first 15 customers with a purchase.  Enjoy refreshments as a thank you for all your support.

On Saturday, June 16th, from 10:00 am to 2:00 pm, the glass studio at Madhaus Gallery will be open for students to try their hands at making these glass chili peppers. This is a great introduction to the glass studio. Sessions are scheduled by appointment and each piece takes approximately a half hour per person. To make your reservation, please contact Robin at 515-707-4309. Cost is $50 per person.

Have you have ever considered adding solar power to your home but didn’t know where to start? On Saturday, June 16th, from 10:30 to 11:30 am, join Tim Dwight, president of the Iowa Solar Energy Trade Association (ISETA), for an introductory presentation on solar power held at the Winterset Public Library. The discussion will cover the benefits of solar for Iowans, how to get started, energy savings, resources, credits, and more. More information about ISETA can be found at the ISETA website.

Enjoy an evening of good food, great music and amazing locally made Hard Apple Cider at the Winterset Cidery on Saturday, June 16th. Revel in flavors cooked up by Up in Smoke and the music by KALEENA. A Canadian-born singer/song writer, Kaleena has been carving out her place in Central Iowa soul music by exploring the unique place where folk and singer/song writer tendencies meet the soulful, upbeat corners of R & B. Up in Smoke will begin serving at 5:30 pm and music will be from 7:00 to 10:00 pm. There is a $5 cover charge. It’s going to be steamy this weekend but there’s plenty of shade at the Winterset Cidery.

The Iowa is showing Book Club (PG-13) for a second weekend. Starring Diane Keaton, Jane Fonda, Candice Bergen and Mary Steenburgen, this chick flick is definitely good for some laughs. Next weekend, Solo: A Star Wars Story, will hit the big screen at The Iowa. Director Ron Howard’s slick, funny prequel fills in several Star Wars gaps. It’s compelling to explore how Han hooked up with Chewie and Lando, but it’s even more interesting to uncover the particulars of Han’s background, his introduction to smuggling, and his first love story.

On Saturday, June 16th, the Madison County Sportsman Club is hosting a FREE fishing event for children ages 2 to 16 from 8:00 am to noon. Fishing, prizes, food and fun can be had 1/4 mile North of Cedar Covered Bridge.

Join the Madison County Democrats for a Father’s Day Chocolate Bacon Brunch to be held at the VFW Hall Sunday, July 17th, from 10:00 am to 1:00 pm.  Enjoy a delicious brunch featuring chocolate-bacon creations such as Chocolate-Bacon Pecan Pie, Chocolate Muffins, biscuits and chocolate gravy, and more! Eggs, pancakes, and other “regular” breakfast foods available too. Tickets are $10 each in advance and are available by contacting Sheila Rusk at 515-210-8790 or Jamie McDonald at 515-468-5534.
