If you need a warm, indoor activity for the family this weekend, here are some cozy ideas.
First, the Iowa Theater is showing the family-friendly movie “Coco” (PG) by Disney’s Pixar Animation Studios, tonight through Sunday. (Note: “The Greatest Showman” starts on Thursday, January 11, and “Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle” is after that, starting January 25th!)
On Saturday morning at 10:30 am, the Winterset Library is hosting at Bullet Journaling Workshop for ages 13-adult. A “bullet journal” can combine your calendar, planner, goals, and to-do lists to focus on productivity in a creative way. Participants should bring their own journal, notebook, sketchbook, diary or whatever you prefer to use for your journal. The library will provide some bullet-printed paper for practice, as well as pens, stickers, and lots of ideas and inspiration to get you started. If you already have a bullet journal started, bring it for show and tell.
Also, be sure to check out the warm new exhibit at the Iowa Quilt Museum: “Feed Sack Quilts.” This may be the museum’s most colorful exhibit to date — not just because of the color in the quilts, but because they’re pushing the envelope of what an exhibit looks like. In addition to quilts, the display includes authentic feed sack clothing, dolls, and other vintage utility items made from feed sacks. It also includes fourteen custom bound volumes of curator Linzee McCray’s book, “Feedsacks: The Colourful History of a Frugal Fabric.” Many of the book bindings feature antique feed sacks and all are stunningly unique. Three quilts in the display are hanging from the ceiling so that visitors can view both the front and the back. Winter hours to view the exhibit are Tuesday through Saturday from 10:00 to 4:00 and Sunday from 12:00 to 4:00. An opening reception is planned for the new exhibit on January 13th from 4:00 to 6:00 pm, with drinks and hors d’oeuvres served while guests visit with the museum board members, director, and exhibit curator Linzee Kull McCray. Tickets are $10.00 and can be purchased at IowaQuiltMuseum.com or at the museum in advance or at the door.

The Winterset Stage has another great season lined up in 2018, and auditions for their March show, Baskerville, will be held on January 7th at 8th from 6:00 to 8:00 pm at the Iowa Theater. Baskerville — the story of an ancient family curse, a desolate moor, a spectral hound and a deranged killer on the loose — is based on the Sherlock Homes mystery The Hound of the Baskervilles, with a comedic twist. It is described as “one of the most sublimely funny adaptations of a classic that you are ever likely to see!” Excepts from the play will be provided for auditions, and nothing needs to be prepared in advance. Casting is for 4 to 5 actors, male and female, to play 14 characters. Rehearsals will begin January 14th and be held on Sunday, Monday, and Tuesday evenings (time TBD), plus February 28 and March 1. Other rehearsals may be added depending on cast availability. The performance dates are March 2, 3, 8, 9 and 10 at 7:00 pm.
Jess Lundquist of ink & flourish calligraphy will be back at the Winterset Art Center on Tuesday, January 9th for a class in Calligraphy 2.0, Thank You Cards. She will also review the techniques covered in the Calligraphy Basics class. The workshop is from 6:00 to 7:30 pm and includes a take-home brush pen, practice drill sheets, three blank notecards waiting for your handwritten “thank-yous,” and a small surprise gift. 1st Avenue Collective is hosting a Hammered Ring Class on January 13th from 1:00 to 3:00 pm. Participants will learn to texture, hammer and fuse fine silver wire to create an assortment of rings. You will receive enough wire to create one wrap-around ring and two to four stackable rings, depending on your ring size. This class is a great introduction to torch work. No prior jewelry experience needed, just a desire to create. Use of tools and materials are included in the class fee of $60.00. The instructors are Gina Crow and Sandra Geronimo. The annual Taste of Summer Event at Winterset High School is planned for Saturday, January 13th with food starting at 3:00 pm. Enjoy a taste of summer while cheering on the Huskies Basketball teams vs. Van Meter at 4:00 and 5:30 pm.
Teddi Yaeger of Teddi Yaeger Photography is offering a Portrait Photography class at the Winterset Art Center on Sunday, January 21st from 1:00 to 3:00 pm. During the two hour class she will share tips and tricks for posing subjects and eliciting genuine facial expressions, as well as the most flattering angles and positions for people. Participants will learn secrets to working with and photographing children of all ages. The class is recommended for ages 12 and up. The Winterset Community School District Administration invites the public to attend a Community Open House from 5:00 to 7:00 pm in the Winterset High School Commons on January 17th. Preliminary facility renovation plans will be shared, and feedback will be requested. Contact the WCSD administration office at 515-462-2718 if you have questions in advance.
Registration for the Father Daughter Sweetheart Dance, which is held on February 9th, will be due on January 19th. The event is for kindergarten through 4th grade girls, and the fee is $30 per couple (plus $10 per additional daughter). Fathers and daughters, grandfathers and granddaughters, uncles and nieces are all invited to join the party for an evening of music, dancing and fun. A local photographer will be on hand to take pictures at an additional charge. Space is limited to 150 young ladies. Register early! Click here to register. The Madison County Conservation Board is sponsoring a two-day field trip to Burlington, Iowa on Saturday, January 20 and Sunday, January 21 for the purpose of viewing Bald Eagles along the Mississippi River and touring the boy-hood home of renowned Conservationist, Aldo Leopold. Beginning in the early 1900’s, Leopold was at the forefront of the conservation movement. Through his work with the U.S. Forest Service and subsequently as the Chair of the Game Management Program at the University of Wisconsin, he has been internationally acknowledged as the “Father of Wildlife Conservation” in America. Leopold historian, Steve Brower, will provide the tour group with a program about the Leopold legacy and a tour of the Leopold boyhood homes and property. On Sunday morning, the group will venture to Lock & Dam 18 on the Mississippi River, a few miles north of Burlington, to view large gatherings of Bald Eagles and other birds and wildlife. The Conservation Board will provide transportation for up to 20 people. Due to limitation of space, advanced reservations for the trip are required. Map of My Kingdom is a play commissioned by Practical Farmers of Iowa, written by Mary Swander, Iowa’s Poet Laureate. It deals with a very important question that affects a lot of land owners in Madison County: When the time comes, what will become of the farm? As a follow-up to the play, which will be on stage at the Iowa Theater on January 26th at 7:00 pm, there will be a Farm Letter Legacy Workshop on January 27th at 9:30 am at the Madison County Historical Complex. Finally…
Here are a couple of really cold thoughts, for those of you who want to brave the weather! The ice skating rink is now open at 1201 W. Jefferson (by the Winterset Tennis Courts).
And also, the Madison County Conservation Board is offering a Community Ice Fishing Day on Saturday, January 27th from 9:00 to noon at Criss Cove. It is open to people of all ages who would like to try their hand at ice fishing, with staff from the Conservation Board and some other experienced anglers on hand to help. A limited number of rods and bait will be available, or you’re welcome to bring your own equipment. A fire and warm beverages will be provided. All participants should come dressed for the weather in multiple layers of warm clothing. This event will be held weather permitting providing the ice meets safety standards. They also have a Full Moon Snowshoe Hike coming up on January 31st at Pammel Park.
