Weekend in Winterset, Dec. 8-10, 2017

The Winterset Stage’s Christmas production of “Two Holiday Family Stories” debuts tonight, December 7th, on stage at The Iowa Theater. The performance includes two short stories that will delight the whole family: O. Henry’s The Gift of the Magi and A Visit from St. Nicholas (or The Night Before Christmas). Thursday, Friday and Saturday shows are at 7:00 pm, and there’s a Sunday matinee at 2:00 on December 10th. Lots of new faces on stage at The Iowa Theater this weekend!

While you’re out, remember that re:home is open this weekend, Thursday through Sunday, and will also be open December 16th and 23rd.

On Friday, December 8th, Farmers & Merchants State Bank will host its annual Christmas Open House at the Winterset main bank and the Winterset motor bank from 9:00 to 3:00. Christmas flute duets by Sue Hansen and Kiernan Blanchard will delight guests from 11:00 to 1:00 in the lobby of the Winterset main bank at 101 W. Jefferson.

An Old Fashioned Christmas takes place this Saturday, December 9th at the Madison County Historical Museum from 10:00 to noon.

Saturday is also a day of celebration for the Winterset Library, with a Holiday Open House from 10:00 to noon.

 

Robin Paul at Madhaus Gallery is hosting a Glassblowing Snowmen event this Saturday, December 9th from 10:00 am to 2:00 pm. The cost is $30. Call Robin to reserve a half hour time slot at 515.707.4309.

Madison County Conservation Board’s Nature Ornament Craft Day will take place this Saturday, December 9th at the Pammel Park Nature Center. Bring the kids to the nature center anytime between 9:30 and 11:00 am to build a Christmas tree craft and prepare a tasty treat for our feathered friends. Pre-registration is requested but not required. Crafts are available while supplies last. If you would like to pre-register, contact the conservation board office at 515-462-3536 or e-mail nautralist@madisoncountyparks.org. This program is FREE and open to children of all ages. Parents/grandparents are welcome and encouraged to participate in the crafts. You are welcome to drop by for just a few minutes or stay the entire time.

On Saturday evening, December 9th from 6:30 to 8:30 pm, join the Winterset Art Center for a fun holiday paint party. You will be guided step-by-step by instructor Lucinda Sperry from Art Love Studio as you paint a beautiful Poinsettia. You can select different shades or colors or follow along with the instructor. The canvas, paints, and additional materials are provided. Please bring your friends, a beverage, and snacks for a fun experience. This class is for ages 18 and up, and class size is limited. The Winterset Art Center is also hosting an afternoon artist reception with Kristin McKibben from 1:00 to 3:00 pm on Saturday, December 9th. Enjoy a cup of coffee and learn more about Kristin’s beautiful encaustic paintings. You’ll be fascinated to hear how she layers hidden elements, oil paint, beeswax, and more to create these mesmerizing works of art.

The Winterset square will be dressed up for an evening of Christmas shopping on Thursday, December 14th from 5:00 to 7:00 pm. Check out Lights… Christmas… Action!

The annual Holiday Open House at Union State Bank will take place on Friday, December 15th from 3:00 to 5:00 pm at the main bank in Winterset. Also, stop by from Noon to 1:00 pm the same day to see the WHS Chamber Choir! Eight students under the direction of Jon Barrett, Winterset Choral Director, will blend their voices to put you in the holiday spirit.

The public is invited to attend this informative presentation panel on the issue of Iowa water quality and trends on Saturday, December 16th at the Winterset Public Library from 9:00 to 11:00 am.

Don’t forget your opportunity to give to Toys for Tots by Saturday, December 16th! Organized by the Winterset Optimist Club, donations may be dropped off at American State Bank, Farmers & Merchants State Bank, or Union State bank.

Winterset Ballet & Dance Studio is putting the final touches on their performance of The Nutcracker, which will have a three day run at The Iowa Theater on December 17th through 19th. Ticket sales are now open, and it is reserved seating. Click this link to buy tickets ahead of time.

 

And look who’s making a return appearance on stage in Winterset on December 22nd! Sarah Zahn, who provided headline entertainment at the 2017 Covered Bridge Festival, will be performing A Holiday Concert on stage at The Iowa Theater.

Also, if you haven’t had a chance to see it yet, the Bounty of Baskets quilt exhibit will be on display at the Iowa Quilt Museum through December 30th. It includes 25 small quilts inspired by authentic 19th Century Basket Quilts and created by members of the American Quilt Study Group.
