Weekend in Winterset, Nov. 10-12

Thank you, Veterans!

Saturday is Veteran’s Day, and on Saturday morning from 7:00 to 11:00 at Winterset Legion Hall, the Winterset American Legion will host a Veteran’s Day Breakfast with sausage gravy and biscuits, eggs, and beverages. Adults are $5.00 and children under 10 are $3.00.

Also on Saturday morning, the Winterset Public Library is presenting The Home Front with WWII Historian Michael Eckers in the library meeting room at 10:30 am.

On Saturday evening from 7:00 to 9:00 pm, the Knights of Columbus will host Veterans Day Bingo at St. Joseph Catholic Church. Packets are $20 for 20 games, and concessions will be available (hot dogs, popcorn, beverages, etc). There will be a progressive jackpot, and all proceeds will benefit the Quilts of Valor Foundation.

On Sunday, November 12 at 2:00 pm, the Iowa Military Veterans Band concludes its 2017 concert series with their traditional Veterans Day Concert at the Des Moines Civic Center. This free concert to salute veterans is open to the public with general admission seating. Two Winterset citizens, Chris Nolte (saxophone) and Dave Trask (percussion), are members of the band.

Students at Winterset Junior High will present a Veterans Day Assembly on Monday, November 13 at 11:00 am in the High School Auditorium. The program will recognize all veterans in attendance. The public is welcome and encouraged to attend.

Re:home is open this weekend, today until 6:00, and Saturday from 9:00 to 5:00. They have lots of beautiful Christmas items to inspire your holiday decor, and this weekend only, all fall wreaths, florals, pumpkins, turkeys and fall signs are 25% off.

Robin Paul is hosting a Glassblowing Winestoppers Event on November 11 from 10:00 to 2:00 pm. What a lovely hostess gift this would be for Thanksgiving, or for Christmas or a New Year celebration! Make your own blown glass wine stopper in the hot shop with lots of guidance. Covered Bridges Winery will have live music by Park Sixty 3 on Saturday evening from 7:00 to 10:00, with food available by Up in Smoke BBQ.

The Winterset Optimist Club invites the community to the 2017 Turkey Dinner on Sunday, November 12, from 11:00 am to 1:30 pm at Winterset High School, 624 Husky Drive in Winterset. Tickets are $10 for adults, $3 for children ages 4-12, and preschoolers under 4 eat free. Tickets are available at the door the day of the event or can be purchased in advance at Farmer’s & Merchants State Bank, Union State Bank, American State Bank, or any Optimist Club member. The menu will include turkey, ham, hot dogs (upon request), mashed potatoes, dressing, vegetables, cranberry sauce, dessert, rolls/butter, and beverages. All proceeds fund activities and programs for youth in our community.

On Sunday, November 12, The Iowa Theater is hosting an Envision Cedar Bridge fundraiser screening of the epic drama Gone With The Wind at 2:00 pm. There will be a piano intermission and some special treats, too.

The Winterset Community Educational Foundation’s Fall Fling is planned for this Tuesday evening, November 14th at 6:00 pm. Call Linda Darling (515-462-3961) or Amy Nolan (515-462-7009) to see if there are still tickets available. All proceeds of this adults-only event go to support the Winterset schools.

The Madison County Conservation Board is resuming monthly Nature Nights in November. The first Nature Night on November 16th from 6:00 to 7:30 pm in the Nature Center at Pammel Park will focus on amphibians and consist of an interpretive program, amphibian themed games and crafts, a fun snack, and a chance to meet one of the special amphibians that lives in the Nature Center. Registration is required for this event, with a fee of $5 per child. Nature nights are family friendly programs intended for children of all ages. Parents and grandparents are encouraged to attend the program.

The annual Holiday Hop bazaar is planned for Saturday, November 18th from 8:30 to 1:30 pm. It will include seven churches and the Winterset Art Center, all brimming with a variety of handmade goods.

The Winterset Lions Club is hosting their 15th Annual Soup Supper on Monday, November 20th from 5:30 to 7:00 pm at New Bridge Church, 1305 W. Jefferson. All are invited to warm up with a bowl of soup and homemade dessert on a chilly night! Tickets are available in advance at North Side Barber, Ben Franklin, and Covered Bridge Realty, or at the door.

Planning for the annual Festival of Lights Parade is now underway, and applications for parade floats are available at www.madisoncounty.com. With a theme like “Candy Land Christmas,” the possibilities are endless!
