Covered Bridge Festival weekend may be our biggest for receiving tourists all at once, but Winterset is a destination for those who love local art and artists all year round. Long after the booths are gone, places like 1st Avenue Collective, Heartland Fiber, re:home, the Winterset Art Center, Piece Works Quilt Shop, b.shannon designs, and Madhaus Gallery remain. All of these offer one-of-a-kind, locally produced works of art, and many of them offer classes. Without leaving town, Winterset residents can learn a wide variety of artistic mediums: jewelry making, knitting and crochet, weaving, quilting, pottery, and more.
One highly specialized area is the fully outfitted hot shop at Madhaus Gallery, where glass artisans from all over the state reserve time to come and create, and owner Robin Paul offers beginning glassblowing classes on a regular basis. (See upcoming classes and events here.)
One upcoming class caught the attention of WOI News/Channel 5 Live, “Glassblowing Pumpkins.” Early yesterday morning they came to Madhaus and filmed a story about it, which you can view here.
The October 21st Glassblowing Pumpkins event that Madhaus Gallery is hosting this Saturday, October 21st from 10:00 am to 2:00 pm is now full, but since it has been so popular, they’ll be offering it again next weekend. Sign up for a half-hour time slot and make your own blown glass pumpkin with the help of the instructor in the hot shop. Cost is $75 per person; call Robin to reserve a spot at 515.707.4309 or email email@example.com.
The Winterset Huskies football game vs. Denison-Schleswig has been selected by WOI/Channel 5 as the Friday night Game of the Week. The school will host Channel 5 on Friday morning in the high school gym starting at 6:00 am, and they’ll be broadcasting live segments between 6:00 and 7:00 am. The public is invited to join them in the gym to show your Husky Spirit, bright and early. Go Huskies!

The Winterset Art Center just started a series of Preschool Art sessions in the mornings and afternoons on Wednesdays, and on Friday, they’ll be holding a special “Fall Into Fun” Art Exploration Class for 2-3 year olds from 9:00 to 10:00 am. Call to see if there is still space available in this class, and if not, ask about November 10th. They’re planning to offer it again that day.
