Weekend in Winterset, Oct. 27-29, 2017

Here’s a bit of news that every nonprofit organization would love to hear! Terri Kuhns, Treasurer of the Iowa Quilt Museum, recently received a letter from Jim Mease, Vice President and Trust Officer for Farmers & Merchants State Bank. It stated, “A valued customer with Madison County roots and a keen interest in the arts has made a substantial gift to the museum on an anonymous basis.” Kuhns shared the news at the museum’s September Board of Directors meeting.

The gift, which came in the form of appreciated stocks, amounted to over $100,000 once the stocks were sold as the donor stipulated. The funds have been applied to debt incurred by the museum for building acquisition, architectural fees, and contractor’s costs for conversion of the former J.C. Penney’s storefront into a high-quality museum space.

According to Kuhns, this gift means that once five-year pledges made by other valued donors in the community and beyond are fulfilled, the museum’s total debt will be under $45,000. “Considering we are less than two years old,” she commented, “this is just incredible.”

Not present were board members Pat Corkrean, Marianne Fons, Phyllis Kaldenberg, and Randall Parkin.

The Iowa Quilt Museum (IQM), conceived by Pat and Nancy Corkrean, is a non-collecting museum. Its Show Committee chooses themes, and either curates or invites guest curators to locate and borrow theme-related quilts, which are displayed for three or four months and then returned to their owners. The IQM is also the national headquarters of the Quilts of Valor Foundation, which utilizes a small office space on the second floor. Museum Director Megan Barrett manages the museum’s activities—coordinating with curators, marketing and promoting the museum’s cultural and educational activities, scheduling volunteers, maintaining the building, applying for program grants, and other tasks. Visitors are welcomed on a daily basis by a group of dedicated volunteers, many of them local quilters or quilt lovers.

In writing to its unnamed donor via Farmers & Merchants, the museum’s Board of Directors stated, “We write to express our heartfelt thanks for your incredibly generous donation to the Iowa Quilt Museum. We thank you as well for allowing us to publicize your anonymous donation locally. Learning of one person’s generosity will hopefully encourage others who have the ability to do so to donate to us and other nonprofits in Madison County.”

Donations to IQM can be made directly to the museum at 68 E. Court Avenue, Winterset, or delivered to Treasurer Terri Kuhns at the Village Bootery. For more information about the Iowa Quilt Museum, including hours and exhibits, visit www.iowaquiltmuseum.org.
