Weekend in Winterset, Sept. 15-17

As weekends go in Winterset, this one has a lot to offer! As I mentioned in last week’s post, the Where Madison County Creates event has gained momentum, and there will be artistic displays and endeavors all over town by various businesses, organizations and citizens. The official event takes place on Saturday, September 16th from 10:00 am to 5:00 pm and Sunday, the 17th from 12:00 to 4:00 pm. Hours may vary slightly by location.

At 1st Avenue Collective, there will be an Art & Craft Show on the Patio where you can meet some of the artisans they work with. Pottery, woodworking, jewelry, photography, dog treats and needlework will be featured, with demonstrations and opportunities to make and take your own creations.

Meet pottery creator Emily McFarland at 1st Avenue Collective on September 16th, along with other talented regional artists.

Angel Wings & CT will show you the art of junk angels and silverware jewelry. Robin at Madhaus Gallery will be demonstrating glassblowing in the studio both days and the gallery will be open. Heartland Fiber Co. will demonstrate spinning, knitting and weaving, and there will be other participants set up in their homes and outside, such as Sunlight Harvest (alpaca yarn wool crafts) and Handy Thompson (woodworking) on the courthouse lawn.

b.shannon designs will have a loose gemstone sale, with various gems in every price range. You can incorporate your own inspiration in a custom design for your gem, or leave it up to Brooke to create something unique.

Piece Works Quilt Shop will have a selection of quilts on display in their upstairs gallery, including works by Victoria Findlay Wolfe and Amy Ellis. You’ll also see quilters hard at work on their latest projects.

Speaking of quilts, all around town as you visit the various locations involved in “Where Madison County Creates,” you’ll see homes, businesses, and many of our popular landmarks covered in quilts. Based on an age-old tradition of hanging quilts outside to air after a long winter, the effect is a photogenic display of art in the wild. Bring your camera! Be sure to stop by the Iowa Quilt Museum also.

The Winterset Art Center will have a new gallery exhibit by artist James Givan on display. Attendees can also learn about ceramics with a pottery demonstration in Studio B, and for a small fee, stay to create a piece of artwork using alcohol inks or watercolors in Studio A. Hungry for lunch? Chicken salad will be served on Saturday from 11:00 am to 1:30 pm. Your donation of $7.50 will go directly towards continued facility improvements at the Art Center.

As if that weren’t enough, it’s also City-Wide Garage Sale day on Saturday (with some getting started early on Friday, no doubt).

Re:home will be open this weekend, with all kinds of fall treasures! Their hours are Thursday (today) from 11:00 to 7:00, Friday from 10:00 to 6:00, and Saturday from 9:00 to 6:00.

And the weekly Madison County Farmers Market continues on Saturday morning from 8:00 am to noon (through October 7th). Lots of early fall goodness available this week.

The Winterset Public Library is hosting a Plant Swap & Sale on Saturday morning, September 16th from 8:30am to noon (8:30am bring your plants; 9:00 plant swap; 9:30-12:00 sale).  This is a fun event where gardeners exchange perennials, houseplants, cuttings, and bulbs, and enjoy visiting with other gardeners. Those new to gardening can pick out plants to buy and get lots of good tips for success. They will have plant labels for you to fill out and bags to carry your new plants home. Contact Sally Morris at 515-462-1731. Also, recycle your gardening magazines and catalogs by donating them to the library during September.

And out on the north side of town just behind Shopko, CMR is hosting its annual Car Show, with all proceeds to benefit the Rebuild Cedar Bridge project.

When you’re ready to wind down from all the activity, relax at the movies. “Wind River” (R) opens this Friday at The Iowa Theater.

On Saturday evening, the popular annual event in support of education programs at the Madison County Parks, an “Evening Under the Stars,” will be held at 5:30 at Pammel Park Lodge. Check to see if there are still advance tickets available by calling Duane Gordon at 515-462-2161.

Covered Bridges Winery will have live music on Saturday evening by Malcolm Wells & The Two Timers from 7:00 to 10:00 pm, with food available by Roadside Tacos from 6:30 to 8:30 pm. Weather permitting, music will be held outside. Bring a lawn chair, $5.00 cover, and enjoy!

And the Winterset Cidery will have music by iNFUZiON on Saturday evening from 6:00 to 9:00, with the Central Iowa Auto Club hosting a Show & Shine on the grounds at the Cidery and food by Up in Smoke starting at 5:00.

The Iowa Quilt Museum is offering a three-week DIY Barn Quilt Block Class, starting September 17th. “Barn Blocks” are painted panels representing patchwork quilt block designs, used to decorate barns, rural outbuildings, and garages. In this three-session class, you’ll learn about American quilt block history, select a favorite block of your own, and learn special, no-fail techniques as you draft and paint your own 4’ x 4’ quilt block panel. Week 1: Design – Sunday, September 17, 1:00 – 2:30pm; Week 2: Draft – Sunday, October 1, 1:00 – 2:30pm; Week 3: Paint – Sunday, October 8, 1:00 – 4:00pm. Register and pay online at www.IowaQuiltMuseum.org or in person at the Iowa Quilt Museum.
