Weekend in Winterset, Sept. 22-24

I think we should start this weekend early, because the Friends of the Library Book Sale starts this afternoon at the Winterset Public Library. Don’t worry if you’re not a member… you can still enter the Members’ Preview Sale tonight if you buy a membership at the door.

Re:home is open this weekend, and they’ve been busy between this weekend and last with restocking and adding new items. Their hours are Thursday (today) from 11:00 to 7:00, Friday from 10:00 to 6:00, and Saturday from 9:00 to 5:00.

The Winterset Cidery has Trivia Night tonight from 7:00 to 9:00 pm; 1638 Highway 169.

This is Homecoming weekend for the Winterset Huskies. Friday’s pep assembly starts at 1:20 pm, followed by the parade at 2:30 pm (starting at Winterset Elementary and heading up 2nd Avenue, turning east on Court, and eventually ending back at the Elementary). The football game vs. Carrol starts at 7:30 pm, with introduction of the Homecoming court during halftime. The dance is on Saturday at the Middle School from 8:00 to 11:00 pm.

Congratulations to the 2017 Homecoming Court: Danny Barker, Natalie Hansen, Madison Honkomp, Ellie Easter, Riley Kaufman, Connor Van Pelt, Nick Mortoza, Nick Baur, Easton Holder, and Brenden Kirk.

The Pumpkin Ranch opens this Friday, September 22nd, with a special live music event the next night. Big Rack Brew Haus, located just up the road from The Pumpkin Ranch, will also be there on September 23rd from 4:00 to 6:00 for a free beer tasting. Check out http://www.thepumpkinranch.com for a full schedule of activities and hours for their 2017 season.

Logan Lucky (PG-13) opens this Friday at The Iowa Theater, in which West Virginia family man Jimmy Logan teams up with his one-armed brother and a sister to steal money from a motor speedway in North Carolina. I love this trailer!

The annual Knights of Columbus Tootsie Roll Drive is this Saturday, September 23rd, at the north 4-way stop from 8:30 am to 1:00 pm. Proceeds will go to the Madison County Association for Special People and Iowa Special Olympics. Members of the Winterset St. Joseph’s Parish Knights of Columbus will be at the 4-way stop by Hardee’s, collecting donations and handing out Tootsie Rolls. A lot of special people in Madison County will benefit from this event, and the Knights of Columbus very much appreciate the support they receive from he community for this each year.

The weeks are getting fewer (just three weekends left) and the bounty getting bigger at the weekly Madison County Farmers Market, continuing on Saturday mornings on the Winterset square from 8:00 am to noon (through October 7th).

Our friends in Earlham invite you to visit the Bricker-Price Block on Saturday during their open house, “Unlock the Block.” It’s a great opportunity to see the progress they’re making on a great renovation project for the community.

This Saturday and Sunday, Yoga on the Farm at PepperHarrow Farm will feature yoga, farm tours, local artists, live music, overnight camping, a kids’ area, and more.

Covered Bridges Winery will have live music on Saturday evening by The Richard Paul Band from 7:00 to 10:00 pm, with food available by Beef Cake Fuel from 6:30 to 8:30 pm. Weather permitting, music will be held outside. Bring a lawn chair, $5.00 cover, and enjoy!

On Sunday, September 24 from 3:00 – 5:00 pm, join For Lands Sake! members at the Arbor Shelter in Winterset City Park for a guided stroll to Clark Tower and back. Search for hidden fall treasures such as late blooming plants and distinctive seed heads for identifying native plants, birds, and animals. Dress for the weather and bring a water bottle! Sandy Thompson will be your guide.

Coming Soon

Winterset Ballet & Dance Studio is having a workshop with Nick Anthony, a Los Angeles-based teacher and choreographer, on Monday, September 25 from 5:00-7:00 pm. Mr. Anthony, best known as a professional dancer, choreographer, teacher and adjudicator, will be teaching hip-hop for the first hour and contemporary for the second hour.  The cost to participate is $25 for 1 hour, or $35 for both hours. Here’s a program for preschoolers and their families, offered by the Winterset Kiwanis, Hy-Vee, Friends of the Library, and the Madison County ISU Extension: Raising School-Ready Readers, starting September 25th.

A couple weeks ago, Steve Kirby shared with the Chamber of Commerce via Facebook that the Winterset Pizza Hut noticed five young teens in the community raising funds for hurricane relief in Houston, and decided to reward them for their good deeds with free pizza. I love it! On Tuesday, September 26, Pizza Hut will be holding a fundraiser to benefit the Rebuild Cedar Bridge project. They will have a buffet from 11:30 am to 1:00 pm and again from 5:00 to 8:00 pm, donating 20% to the project (no coupons allowed to donate).

The Madison County Women’s Giving Circle will meet Tuesday, September 26 at 6:30 pm in the back meeting room of the Sports Page Restaurant. If any Madison County women would like to come by to check out the group, you are invited.  Arrive at 5:30 pm for dinner and then stay for the one hour meeting, or come for the meeting only if you prefer — your choice. The purpose of the Madison County Women’s Giving Circle is to enhance the dignity and opportunities for Madison County women and all children. Non-profit organizations are invited to bring projects for consideration for funding. Three proposals will be randomly selected, then the members vote for their choice of the three. Ballots are counted and the winner receives individual checks of $50 (totals can reach nearly $5000).

Join Naturalist Amy Holley at Hanson Prairie for an evening hike on September 27. During the hike, participants will be circling the pairie along the mowed fire breaks with time to view the prairie and see first-hand the results of a spring priarie burn. Anyone interested should plan to meet at the gate of Hanson Prairie at 7 pm. The hike will last about 45 min – 1 hour. To RSVP, call 515-462-3536 or e-mail naturalist@madisoncountyparks.org.

Next Thursday, September 28th, join the Madison County ISU Extension Office in celebrating their 100th year in Madison County at their open house. They’ll have Cy on hand with a photo booth, their new Youth Coordinator and the rest of the staff, free food and giveaways, and more. They would love to have a good turnout to celebrate this century of service.

Finally…

Bring your pledge to support the Rebuild Cedar Bridge project and join a community celebration on Sunday, October 8th from noon to 3:00 pm at AgriVision Equipment Group. Any amount is appreciated! There will be live bluegrass music by the Hargrove Family, a live broadcast with Van Harden of WHO Radio, food available for purchase from Rodell’s Smokehouse, a bounce house, corn box, and pumpkin activities for kids, and free hayrack rides to Cedar Bridge for dessert! More information coming soon.
