Weekend in Winterset, August 25-27

Happy weekend, everyone! Let’s jump right in and start with breakfast.

The Winterset Kiwanis Club will be serving a Pancake Breakfast at the American Legion Hall  on Saturday, August 26th from 7:00 to 11:00 am. They’ll be serving all-you-can-eat pancakes, fried or scrambled eggs, sausage, orange juice, milk and coffee, just $6.00 each. Funds go to support youth projects and causes.

And right after that, you can stroll to the grounds of the John Wayne Birthplace & Museum to attend the dedication of the freshly painted Madison County Freedom Rock, on Saturday at 11:00 am. The public is invited to attend. Donations are still being accepted for this project. Contact Rod Beem at  rowdy0079@aol.com for more information.

Also in the patriotic spirit, make plans to attend the movie “Megan Leavey” (PG-13) at The Iowa Theater tonight (Friday) or Saturday evening at 7:00. Admission is free to all veterans and current service members. This film is the true life story of Megan Leavey, a young Marine corporal whose unique discipline and bond with a military combat dog saved many lives during her deployment in Iraq. Assigned to clean up the K-9 unit after a disciplinary hearing, Leavey starts to identify with Rex, a particularly aggressive dog that she trains. Over the course of their service, Megan and Rex complete more than 100 missions until an improvised explosive device injures both, putting their fates in jeopardy.

On Saturday evening starting at 5:00, there’s a fundraising event to benefit the adoption efforts of Mike and Heidi Boyd and Mike and Jessica Leeds. The public is invited to attend and enjoy! The Dueling Pianos of Andy Anderson and Mike Leeds will be performing their high-energy, request-driven, fun-filled show at the Avenue of the Saints Event Center in St Charles. Advanced Tickets are $20 or $25 at the door. Doors open at 5:00, and the show is at 7:30 pm. Food will be available all evening (pulled pork, pizza, salad, chips, and dessert) for a freewill donation. There will also be silent auction items.

Also on Saturday evening, patrons can enjoy the music of Code Blue (Brick Imerman and Bob Paterson) at Covered Bridges Winery from 7:00 to 10:00 pm. Food by Roadside Tacos will be available from 6:30 to 8:30 pm. Weather permitting, music will be held outside. $5.00 cover at the door.

On Sunday, August 27th from 10:00 to 11:30 am, the Winterset Art Center is hosting a “Spa Brunch: Make and Take Sugar Scrubs” with coffee, tea, and cake. Participants will learn to make and take home two kinds of custom made aromatherapy body scrubs. Recipes, instruction, and all materials provided. The class fee is $25 for Winterset Art Center members and $30 for non-members. Contact Maggie Howe at 515-490-7801 or girlwithasword@yahoo.com to register.
